NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Sophomore Michael Concato outdueled Yale's Chris Lanham to help Dartmouth take the first game of a doubleheader at Yale Field in eight innings, 3-2. The second game was a stark contrast, however, as the Big Green (8-19, 6-4 Ivy) scored their most runs in 11 years in a 22-10 slugfest to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Senior Matt Parisi led the charge in the nightcap as he went 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBIs, plus became the first Dartmouth hitter with four doubles in a game since World War II. Junior Joe Purritano matched a career high with five RBIs while reaching base five times with a double, three-run homer and three walks, and senior Matt MacDowell went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, also tying a personal best. In addition, junior Nick Ruppert scored four times while going 2-for-4 with two walks and freshman Dustin Shirley scored three runs and drove in three more.
The Bulldogs (9-16, 2-8 Ivy) had 17 hits of their own, matching the output for the Big Green, but Dartmouth was also aided by 11 walks, three Yale errors, seven wild pitches, two passed balls and a hit batter.
The offensive outburst began in the second as MacDowell ripped a two-run single and Parisi stroked a two-run double before coming home himself on Purritano's double for a 5-0 lead and bringing the afternoon to an early end for Yale hurler Mason Kukowski (2-2).
The Bulldogs touched Dartmouth starter Jackson Bubala for two runs in the fourth as Robert Baldwin, who had three hits and three RBIs in the game, singled to drive in Richard Slenker, who had doubled. Singles by Alex Boos and Nate Adams with two out brought Baldwin around to score to cut the Big Green lead down to three at 5-2.
But Dartmouth answered immediately in the fifth as freshman Kyle Holbrook yanked an RBI double inside the right-field line, then crossed the plate thanks to a wild pitch and a MacDowell sacrifice fly to put the Green back up by five at 7-2.
When the Bulldogs put runners on the corners with two out in their half of the inning, Dartmouth head coach Bob Whalen went to the bullpen for freshman left-hander Marc Bachman, who needed just one pitch to escape the jam with a grounder to third.
Senior Nick Lombardi tacked on a run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly, plating Parisi after his second two-bagger, and Yale responded with an unearned run, leaving the score at 8-3.
Shirley and Parisi each had an RBI in the seventh before the game got completely out of hand in the eighth. Dartmouth scored seven times on four hits and three walks with Purritano capping the inning with his second long ball of the season, a three-run shot.
Trailing 17-3, Yale matched the Big Green with seven runs of its own in the bottom half with the big hit coming from Baldwin with a two-run double. But Dartmouth finished the onslaught with five more runs in the ninth on two hits, three walks, two errors and two wild pitches.
Bachman (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory with 2.1 innings of relief in which he surrendered just one unearned run.
The opener was a much tighter game with Concato and Lanham in control. The Bulldogs were able to strike first when Eric Hsieh hit a one-out single in the third, stole second and scored from third one out later on a Slenker double.
After Lanham recorded one of his six strikeouts in the game to start the fourth, his next two pitches led to a 2-1 Big Green lead. Lombardi dropped a single into center on the first one, and sophomore Michael Ketchmark deposited his next offering over the fence in deep left-center for his second four-bagger of the year.
In the fifth, Boos hit a lead-off double for Yale and took third on a sacrifice bunt. Concato got the second out on a grounder right at Ketchmark at first with Boos holding at third, but Green Campbell found a hole between short and third for an RBI single to knot the score at two.
Dartmouth could not take advantage of two Bulldog errors in the sixth, and Concato fanned two hitters to end the Yale half, stranding a runner at second. The Big Green had another terrific scoring opportunity in the seventh with runners on the corners with one down, but Lanham induced an inning-ending double play.
Finally, in the extra eighth inning, Dartmouth was able to break the tie after loading the bases when Lombardi singled, Ketchmark was plunked an Ruppert reached on an error. Holbrook then lofted a 2-0 pitch to center for a sacrifice fly and a 3-2 lead. That was all Concato (2-3) needed as he retire the side in order for his third complete game of the year in 102 pitches, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
Lanham (3-4) took the loss after giving up the three runs, the last one unearned, on seven hits and a walk while hurling 106 pitches.
Parisi and Lombardi each had two knocks in the game, and the top three hitters in the Bulldog lineup — Hsieh, Campbell and Slenker — all had a pair as well.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
Notes: The last player to hit four doubles in a game for Dartmouth was J.J. Curren, a member of the U.S. Navy playing for the Big Green in 1943 … the last time Dartmouth had at least 22 runs in a game came in a 23-9 triumph over Fairleigh Dickinson on March 17, 2004, one of four times the Green scored 20 or more runs in a game that year. They had not done it since … the Big Green have scored 22 or more runs in a game 15 times since the start of the 20th century, and the modern-day record is 28 against St. Anselm during the 2001 season … Dartmouth had three sacrifice flies (all by Holbrook) on the season through the first game of the doubleheader, then hit four in the second game, all by different players.
