HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore Taylor Ng clinched the deciding match for the No. 37 Dartmouth women's tennis team as the Big Green won 4-3 on Sunday against a Penn squad that was coming off a win over Harvard yesterday.
Dartmouth improves to 15-5 and 2-2 in Ivy League play, while Penn moves to 8-8 and 1-4 in conference action.
Playing on the Boss outdoor courts, Dartmouth won the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 1 from Ng and freshman Kristina Mathis and at No. 3 from the freshmen tandem of Julia Schroeder and Lexxi Kiven.
The Big Green carried that momentum into singles as junior co-captain Katherine Yau won easily at No. 2 and Mathis also won in straight sets at No. 3. But the Quakers battled back, taking the No. 4, 5, and 6 singles matches.
This left Ng on the court, engaged in a knock-down, drag-out fight with Penn's top player, Sol Eskenazi. Ng won the first set in a tiebreak and then Eskenazi, the 2012 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a three-time First Team All-Ivy singles and doubles player, came back to win the second set 7-6.
Playing exquisite all-court tennis, the two traded leads throughout the third set, but Ng finally prevailed on her fifth match point, winning a third set tiebreak 7-5 to take the match and clinch victory for the Big Green. To see a video of Ng's match point, click here.
Dartmouth returns to action at home on Friday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day against Brown.
