NEWARK, N.J. – Facing each other for the first time ever, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology, 7-5, on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Big Green improved to 4-6, while the Highlanders, who were playing the final game of their inaugural season, wrapped up the year with a record of 0-12.
Sophomore Wiley Osborne had a good day, assisting on four of the seven goals, while freshman Jack Korzelius led both teams with a hat trick, including the game-winner with 7:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Dartmouth took an early 2-0 lead with a goal by senior Adam Fishman one minute into the opening quarter and another by junior Jack Connolly 40 seconds later. Markers by Tyler Baggett with 6:08 remaining and another by Joe Lomeli five minutes later tied the score at two, but freshman Cody George's first collegiate goal with 57 ticks to go gave the Green a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Just one goal was scored in the second; Korzelius netted an unassisted tally with 11:50 to play and, even though a combined seven shots were taken in the remaining minutes, none of them made it past the goalkeepers.
The Highlanders tied things up, once again, with a Gabe Giovanello goal with 11:40 to play and a Liam Derkasch marker with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, making the score 4-4.
The Big Green got one ahead with 13:47 remaining in regulation following a tally by junior Billy Heidt, but Derkasch would tie the score with his 11th of the season less than 40 seconds later. Dartmouth's defense worked in overdrive for the last 13 minutes of action, as this was NJIT's final goal of the game. Korzelius scored twice more two minutes apart to give the visitors a comfortable lead to last until the final horn.
NJIT outshot Dartmouth, 32-24. Although the Big Green did not have any man-up situations, they held the Highlanders to 0-for-2 with the extra player. Junior Blair Friedensohn had 11 saves, while Nick Marzullo stopped seven shots.
Dartmouth's final road game of the season will take place on Saturday, April 18, when it faces Ivy League rival Penn at 12 p.m.
