HANOVER, N.H. — After getting swept in a three-game series over the weekend by Wesleyan, Amherst came out swinging at Dartmouth's Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park on Tuesday afternoon, collecting 18 hits to cool off the red-hot Big Green by a final of 15-4. Tyler Jacobs drove in five runs and Conner Gunn rapped out four hits to lead the Lord Jeffs (19-10) while snapping Dartmouth's 14-game winning streak, dropping the Green to an even 20-20 on the season.
Junior Joe Purritano tied a Dartmouth record he achieved earlier this season by smacking two triples, and finished the afternoon going 3-for-5 while scoring two of the team's four runs. Senior Nick Lombardi also had his 13th career sacrifice fly, breaking a record that he had shared with former major leaguer Ed Lucas '04.
Big Green starter Sam Fichthorn (0-2) quickly recorded the first out, but Andrew Vandini ended a 13-pitch at-bat by drawing a walk, starting a three-run rally in the first. After Mike Odenwaelder hit a double into the left-field corner, Yanni Thanopoulos hit his first of two triples in the game, then scored when Gunn stroked a single.
In the third, Brandon Hardin drove in one run with a single before Jacobs delivered a two-run three-bagger to put Amherst up, 6-0.
Dartmouth got on the board against Amherst starter Riley Streit in the fourth when freshman Kyle Holbrook — who earlier in the day had been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week — belted an RBI double to score Purritano after he had led off the inning with a triple down the first-base line.
But for the third time, the Lord Jeffs tallied three runs, this time on a bases-loaded single by Jacobs to plate two and a sacrifice fly by Vandini in the fifth for a 9-1 lead.
In the sixth, Dartmouth looked like it might get back into the game against lefty reliever Sam Schneider as Purritano and Lombardi began the stanza with base hits and advanced on a passed ball. Holbrook scalded a pitch, but it was right at the center fielder Odenwaelder. Junior Nick Ruppert and senior pinch hitter Jay Graham both came through with RBI singles, but that would be all for the Green as they closed the gap to 9-3.
Amherst tacked on solitary runs in the seventh and eighth, the first on a run-scoring double off the bat of Jacobs, the second on Odenwaelder's sixth home run of the season. Between the two scores, Dartmouth added one of its own on Lombardi's sacrifice fly, scoring Justin Fowler who ran for senior Matt Parisi after his second hit of the afternoon.
The final four runs, all of which were unearned, came in the ninth for the Lord Jeffs as Vandini and Gunn both had RBI doubles.
Streit (4-1) was credited with the win despite going just four innings as he was making a scheduled shortened start. He allowed one run on three hits while striking two. Chris Baldi earned his first save by getting the final nine outs, also yielding a run on three hits while walking two and punching out a pair.
Each of the seven Dartmouth pitchers gave up at least one run and combined to walk a season-high seven batters, but struck out eight as well.
Gunn finished the day 4-for-6 with two runs and two RBIs, and Jacobs was just a homer shy of the cycle going 3-for-4 with two runs and his five RBIs. Thanopoulos also had three hits including his two triples, scoring three runs and driving in three more.
Dartmouth now awaits the Ivy League Championship Series, which will take place on May 9-10 against either Columbia or Penn. Those two teams tied atop the Gehrig Division standings and will play a one-game playoff in New York on May 2 at 1 p.m. The winner of that game will host the Big Green in the best-of-three series, which will be shown live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
