CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 31 Dartmouth women's tennis team fell to No. 2 North Carolina, 4-0, in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Championship at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Green ended their historic season (which included being ranked as high as 18th in the nation, going undefeated for the first seven weeks of the spring and earning their first-ever bid to NCAAs) with a record of 19-6. The Tar Heels improved to 29-1 and will advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Waco, Texas.
"I told the team after the match that we just played the number two team in the country and learned that we can play at this level," head coach Bob Dallis said. "They played incredibly hard and it's worth noting that Akiko was leading in her match, Kat had a really close match with the country's No. 16 player, and Taylor and Kristina were both still on the court battling the country's No. 7 and No. 20 players respectively when UNC clinched the match."
UNC won 8-0 at No. 3 and 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to start the day with a one-point advantage. At No. 1, sophomore Taylor Ng and freshman Kristina Mathis led the 35th-ranked pairing of Hayley Carter and Whitney Kay during the early stages of the match, and the score was tied at four when the match expired.
The Tar Heels soon made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles and a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Hayley Carter clinched the match for UNC with a very close 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over junior Katherine Yau at No. 2.
Playing in the final match of her Big Green career, senior Akiko Okuda had defeated Ashley Dai, 7-5, in the first set and was leading, 4-3, in the second right when the Tar Heels got their fourth point and the match went unfinished.
"Coach Jones and I are very proud of the team and what they accomplished this year," Dallis continued. "Now we're looking forward to the NCAA singles tournament with Taylor."
Ng will compete in the NCAA singles championship starting on Wednesday, May 20, in Texas.
