HANOVER, N.H. – Phil Hession, a senior on the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, was named a 2015 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American on Monday.
In 1989, the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities.
Hession, who hails from Canton, Massachusetts, is majoring in psychological and brain studies and has a cumulative grade point average of 3.38.
On the field, his strongest performances came in his final year with the Big Green. He appeared in each of the 13 games and started all but one and had 14 points from six goals and eight assists, which was good for fourth. He was tied for second on the team with 15 caused turnovers. He led Dartmouth in both ground balls (101) and face-offs (140-for-224) and, in the Ivy League, he was second and third, respectively, in those categories.
He broke his own single-game records in both ground balls and face-offs on three separate occasions throughout the season. Most recently against UMass Lowell on April 21, the senior set new marks by grabbing 19 ground balls and going 22-for-25 at the X.
Even with the season over, Hession is still being recognized for the year he had. He was named to the All-Ivy First Team for the first time in his career at the end of April and was tabbed to the 2015 All-New England Second Team as both a midfielder and in face-offs in May. Of the 30 players on both the first and second teams, he was the lone individual who appeared in more than one category.
