HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's cross country team was dominant in its 2015 season opener Saturday morning at the Hanover Country Club.
The Big Green posted a perfect 15 points in taking the team title on the 8K course at the Dartmouth Invitational in cool, cloudy conditions in the Upper Valley.
Senior Brian Masterson led a Dartmouth contingent that claimed the first 13 collegiate spots. Masterson ran a 24:24.51 to take home the top individual place and set the tone for what proved to be an easy Dartmouth victory.
Junior Nat Adams and senior Peter Geithner followed soon thereafter, claiming second (24:29.04) and third (24:30.58), respectively.
Sophomore Patrick Gregory was fifth overall in 24:32.09, finishing behind one of two unattached runners (both former Big Green harriers themselves) who were able to crack the current team's authority over the top of the standings.
Junior Julian Heninger (24:37.24) was the final Dartmouth runner to score points, while classmates Daniel Salas (24:41.80) and Joey Chapin (24:48.80) denied any other team the opportunity to pick up the six- or seven-point finishes.
The win never seemed to be in doubt as the front pack was a sea of green uniforms nearly wire-to-wire. Second-place UMass Lowell was 47 points back of the hosts with a 62-point showing, while Keene State (84), Bentley (100) and Middlebury (125) followed the River Hawks in the team competition, chasing Dartmouth the whole time.
The Big Green are back in action in two weeks, running at Boston College's annual meet on Friday, Sept. 25.
