AMHERST, Mass. – The Dartmouth field hockey team fell to UMass, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in the first road game of the 2015 season for the Big Green.
The lone goal of the afternoon for the visitors came from freshman Gemma Bautista in the 42nd minute. It was the first goal and points of Bautista's collegiate career.
The loss drops the Big Green to 1-3 this season, while Massachusetts improves to 4-2 on the young season.
Nicole Miller was the offensive catalyst for the Minutewomen in the win, scoring three times. Miller scored just a minute and 20 seconds into the game, setting the pace for what would follow in the 68 minutes afterward. Kim Sistermans netted the other UMass goal in the opening frame between Miller's first two tallies of the day.
Bautista pulled her team to within two in the early stages of the second frame on a redirection stemming from a penalty corner with co-captain Rebecca Hu picking up the lone assist.
However, markers from Sarah Hawkshaw, Hannah Farrell and Miller in the final 20 minutes helped the home team earn the non-conference victory at the newly opened Gladchuck Field Hockey Complex.
Junior goalkeeper Paige Duffy made a career-high 10 saves in the losing effort, while her counterpart in Sam Carlino was credited with a pair of stops for UMass.
Overall, the Minutewomen held advantages in both shots (23-7) and penalty corners (12-7).
Dartmouth returns to action at home on Friday when it plays host to Sacred Heart in a 4 p.m. contest at Chase AstroTurf Field.
