HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth sailing team competed in three regattas on the road this weekend. The Big Green's best finish was at the Lake Champlain Open, where they finished in third place out of 16 teams. They took sixth place at both the Nevins Trophy and Stu Nelson Regatta.
Dealing with big waves and strong winds, freshman Rebecca McElvain, sophomores Nathaniel Johansson and Madeleine Walker and senior Hunter Johnstone represented Dartmouth well at Vermont's Lake Champlain Open. The Green ended the day in third with 72 points, just narrowly behind Bowdoin in second with 70 and 14 points better than Roger Williams in fourth place with 86.
Among their best performances, the A-Division had two seconds and two thirds and the B-Division had two first-place finishes, a second and a trio of thirds, while neither squad finished lower than eighth.
Over at Connecticut College for the Stu Nelson Regatta, junior Sophie Kerr and freshman Emma White sailed in the A-Division, while seniors Emily Petso and Hope Wilson competed in the B-Division, wrapping things up with 174 points, just three behind Yale and South Florida with 171 apiece.
Despite the treacherous conditions, the A-Division had two first-place finishes, three seconds, and a fourth, while the B-Division had a first, a second and a fifth as their top finishes on the day.
Sailing in the Stu Nelson Regatta at Kings Point, New York, were junior Charlie Lalumiere and senior Abigail Rohman in the A, juniors Patrick Floyd and Madeleine Cooney in the B and sophomore Erik Weis in the singlehanded C-Division. Facing challenging conditions that changed from a light breeze to a strong wind in the matter of a few hours, the Big Green completed all 18 races and were sixth with 405 points, just six behind Harvard's 399.
The three divisions combined for four first-place finishes, one second, five thirds, and two fourths, while only finishing out of the top-10 twelve times out the 54 races that the Green completed.
Next weekend, Dartmouth will head to the New England Singles at Yale, the SMC Open at Saint Mary's College of Maryland, the Hood Trophy at Tufts and WB Regis at Boston University.
