HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth began the second and final round of the Quechee Club Collegiate Challenge with a five-stroke lead, and made the lead hold up despite a hard-charging Rhode Island team, winning the tournament at a collective two-over par (578).
Freshman John Lazor paced the Big Green by placing second with a 140 (-4), two strokes behind URI's Billy Walthouse. Lazor led Walthouse by a stroke after Saturday's competition, firing a tournament-low 67 (-5). But he could not quite duplicate the magic on Sunday, shooting a respectable one-over 73 while Walthouse carded a two-under 70 to win medalist honors with a 138 (-6).
While Lazor was just one of four golfers to beat par on the weekend, sophomore Ian Kelsey tied for fifth with two others at even par with a 71 (-1) on Sunday. Junior Scott Jaster was one stroke behind Kelsey in a tie for eighth, and senior Charles Cai carded a 74-75—149 (+5) to tie for 14th.
The Big Green also put together a “B” team and performed well, finishing in the middle of the pack in a tie for sixth with Fordham. Senior Dylan Rusk led the group by tying Jaster for eight place with a 69-76—145 (+1).
Rhode Island began the day 13 strokes behind Dartmouth, but the Rams completed Sunday's round at a combined four-under par thanks in part to Mackenzie Denver matching Lazor's first-round 67 (-5). But with solid performances up and down the lineup, the Big Green were able to claim the team title.
Next up for Dartmouth is a trip to New Haven, Connecticut to play in Yale's Macdonald Cup on Saturday and Sunday.
