CANTON, N.Y. – Dartmouth women's hockey skated to a 2-2 tie against St. Lawrence at Appleton Arena on Friday. The Big Green – which snapped a 10-game losing streak – are now 4-12-3 and 4-6-3 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Saints are 12-10-2 and 6-5-1.
"I thought we had a great effort tonight," head coach Mark Hudak said. "We were much more consistent for the entire game. We created lot of scoring opportunities for ourselves and we certainly had chances to win the game. We just came up short in getting the puck into the back of net. Overall, I am really happy with the weekend."
Unlike the night before, it took until halfway through the first period for a puck to find its way into the back of the net. At 12:09, just seconds after the faceoff, the Saints' Alex Moore opened scoring and gave the home team a one-goal lead that would not last long.
Exactly 60 seconds later and shortly after a St. Lawrence penalty, starting with a give-and-go from freshman Kate Landers to junior Kennedy Ottenbreit, the latter dragged the puck to the middle of the ice for a slapshot goal and her eighth tally of the season.
Saint Lawrence came back for the second period wanting more, sending five consecutive shots flying at Dartmouth's goal, but junior netminder Robyn Chemago was able to move quickly and save four of them, all of which were at point-blank range.
At 15:26, with four players from either team on the ice, following a swift back-and-forth between seniors Ailish Forfar and Laura Stacey and junior Emma Korbs, Forfar pocketed the puck in the right side of the net to give Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon.
The Big Green worked hard to keep a goal between them and the Saints, but St. Lawrence's relentless efforts eventually paid off, as Justine Reyes tied things at two-all at 8:58 in the third. Both teams raced feverishly against the clock to get the winning goal, but time ran out before either could do so and the game went to overtime. Just five shots were taken during the extra five minutes and the game ended in a draw.
Dartmouth and St. Lawrence took an even 34 shots throughout the game, and the Green went 1-for-1 on the power play, while holding the Saints to 0-for-1. Both Chemago – who was awarded the third star – and Grace Harrison ended the day with 32 saves.
Dartmouth will play just one game next week, traveling two hours south to take on Harvard at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23.
