WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – After the first day of the annual Dartmouth Invitational at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center on Friday, the Big Green women's swimming and diving team is currently sitting in first place with 367 points, almost 100 ahead of Northeastern in second with 277.5.
The Big Green were highlighted by Kendese Nangle's first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (23.83), where she broke the meet record by four one-hundredths of a second.
To open the weekend, the Dartmouth 200-yard freestyle A relay placed second (1:38.27). Made up of Maddie Dunn, Katie Altmayer, Olivia Samson and Grace Herron, the Big Green finished just over a second behind Northeastern's meet record-breaking time of 1:37.02 and a second and a half ahead of Boston College (1:39.79).
Dartmouth earned 68 points by taking the top four spots in the 500-yard freestyle. Molly Brickman led the way (5:00.27) and was followed by AnnClaire MacArt in second (5:03.72) and Hayley Winter in third (5:04.89). Samson touched in fourth place (5:05.92), leaving half a second between her and Northeastern's Taylor Ellis.
Melanya Zaraska won the 200-yard IM (2:08.11), while Taylor Yamahata was third (2:09.68). In the 50 free, Nangle touched first and Megan Crook was third (24.17), finishing just one one-hundredth of a second behind Sara Touchette-McGowan of Northeastern. Dunn took sixth (24.51) and Charlotte Kamai touched right behind her (24.80).
In the final event of the evening, the 400-yard medley relay, Dartmouth's A relay finished in second place (3:55.52). Composed of Nangle, Crook, Emily Holt and Kamai, the Green touched three seconds behind Northeastern (3:52.35), who broke the pool record in the process. Dartmouth B was third (4:00.59).
The second session of the meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the 200-yard medley relay. While that is going on at the UVAC, the divers will be warming up at Karl Michael Pool in preparation for an 11 a.m. start.
