ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 32 Dartmouth women's team opened 2016 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday, falling to No. 23 Kentucky, 4-1.
After Kentucky won at the No. 3 doubles position, Dartmouth rallied to win the remaining two, starting with senior Katherine Yau and sophomore Julia Schroeder defeating Kirsten Lewis and Akvile Parazinskaite at No. 2, by a score of 6-3.
A huge 6-4 victory by junior Taylor Ng and sophomore Kristina Mathis – who are No. 34 in the nation – over No. 1 Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi gave the doubles point to the Green.
Three of Dartmouth's matches went to three sets, but two were suspended before they were finished. At No. 1, Ng dropped her first set to No. 97 Sutjiadi, 6-3, but picked up a 6-4 win in the second, and the two were tied at two-all when the match was ended early. At No. 2, Yau lost a very close three-setter to No. 100 Adachi, winning the first set, 7-6(3), before dropping the other two.
Mathis had a 6-1 win over Parazinkskaite in the first set, dropped the second, 7-6(3), and was trailing, 5-3, in the third when the match was suspended.
The Big Green return to action on Sunday with a 10 a.m. match against San Francisco.
