HANOVER, N.H. – Despite getting on the board first, the Dartmouth women's hockey team was not able to counter Princeton's trio of third-period goals, falling to the No. 9/9 Tigers, 4-1, at Thompson Arena on Friday.
The Big Green fell to 4-14-3 and 4-8-3 in ECAC Hockey play, while the visitors improved to 16-4-1 and 10-4-1 in conference action.
"I thought we gave a good effort tonight," head coach Mark Hudak said after the game. "The kids were executing what we were asking them to do. Again, we seem to not be able to get the puck in the back of the net."
Dartmouth held an 11-10 shot advantage in the first period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net, as both junior Robyn Chemago and Princeton's Kimberly Newell had a number of big saves to keep it scoreless.
At 4:38 of the second, a passing play from senior Ailish Forfar and freshman Kate Landers made its way to senior Laura Stacey who picked up the puck to the left of Newell in the crease. Stacey skated around the Tiger netminder and backhanded it into the right of the net for the first goal of the day and in her 100th career game. At 17:57, Princeton's Karlie Lund scored to make it a 1-1 game heading into the third.
Jaimie McDonell scored on a breakaway at 10:21 in the final stanza and added another unassisted tally at 16:23 to give the visitors a 3-1 edge. An empty netter by Molly Contini with 27 seconds remaining on the clock ended the game.
Both teams registered 28 shots on goal throughout the game. Dartmouth went 0-for-2 on the power play while holding Princeton to 0-for-5. In net, Chemago stopped 24 shots and Newell made 27 saves.
The Big Green will return to Thompson at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they face No. 4/4 and conference-leader Quinnipiac.
