HANOVER, N.H. – Although the Dartmouth women's hockey team found the back of the net first, it ultimately fell to Cornell, 5-3, in an ECAC Hockey contest at Thompson Arena on Saturday. The Big Green dipped to 4-11-2 and 4-5-2 in conference play, while the Big Red improved to 7-7-2 and 3-4-2.
Senior Laura Stacey had a good day, scoring the first two Dartmouth goals and assisting on the third, scored by classmate Ailish Forfar. Freshman Shannon Ropp appeared in net for the first time since the exhibition game against McGill, making 24 saves in the loss.
“We had another good effort today,” head coach Mark Hudak said after the game. “We played aggressively and did a lot of things that we need to do to be better. We made a few mistakes that cost us some momentum and a few goals. Overall, I think we played more consistently than we have done for a while.”
The very first shot of the game resulted in a goal. Stacey intercepted the puck beside Dartmouth's net, skated freely to the right past a number of players in red and shot to the left of netminder Marlene Boissonnault, getting the Green on the board just 30 seconds into the game. Cornell countered with a Taylor Woods goal at 2:48 and a Christian Higham tally at 8:21 to enter the second with a 2-1 edge over Dartmouth.
The Big Red would hold that one-goal lead until 8:42 in the second, when Stacey received a perfect pass from junior Emma Korbs and pocketed it in the right corner, tying the score at two-all. Ropp made a great point-blank save with less than two minutes to play, but was not so lucky on the next shot, when Kaitlin Doering netted a shorthanded goal with 18 seconds remaining to give Cornell a 3-2 lead heading into the third period.
Cornell increased its lead at 2:58 courtesy of Cassandra Poudrier's shot to the right of Ropp, but Forfar got the Big Green back within one just 25 seconds later, getting to the puck before Boissonnault could and flicking it into the right of the cage. At 13:58, Higham scored what proved to be the last goal of the game.
The Big Red outshot the Big Green, 29-25 and went 1-for-3 on the power play, while holding Dartmouth to 0-for-3. Ropp had 24 saves and Bossonnault stopped 22 shots.
The Green will be on the road for three straight contests. Next weekend, Dartmouth will travel to New York to face Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and will head back to Boston on Saturday, Jan. 23 for a stand-alone game against Harvard.
