HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's hockey team fell to No. 8/8 Quinnipiac, 2-1, at Thompson Arena on Friday evening. The Big Green killed off all six of Quinnipiac's power play opportunities, while going 1-for-1 with the extra player themselves.
Senior Eleni Tebano scored her first goal of her senior season, while classmate Kennedy Ottenbreit and freshman Christina Rombaut also ended the night with one point each. Senior goaltender Robyn Chemago had a season-high 33 saves, making a number of impressive and key stops to keep the game as close as it was.
"I'm really happy with our overall efforts tonight," head coach Laura Schuler said. "Our girls showed a lot of resiliency. I'm very happy with our specialty teams and their ability to capitalize on a power play opportunity, as well as killing off all six of Quinnipiac's chances. There were lots of positives and I'm happy with the direction we're heading in."
Quinnipiac's (8-4-1, 3-2-0) best chance at a goal occurred with 25 seconds to go in the first period. Melissa Samoskevich skated through a handful of Dartmouth (0-5-0, 0-4-0) players and took a shot from the right. Chemago, while hugging the right pipe, made the save, but the puck bounced to the left where the net was unmanned. Luckily, Rombaut acted quickly to clear the puck and keep the game scoreless.
With just over 11 minutes to play in the second, Kenzie Lancaster picked up the puck in Quinnipiac's zone and carried it all the way down the right side, skating behind the net and shooting into the left corner to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. At 14:10, Chemago stopped a would-be goal right off the faceoff, diving for the puck and sliding to the side to make the save.
Early in the third, Rombaut got the puck on a breakaway and headed for Sydney Rossman in net, but was thwarted by a waiting Quinnipiac defender. With 13 minutes to play, Chemago had another huge stop when she went to save Taylar Cianfarano's cross in the crease, falling over in the process. With the right side of the net wide open, Samoskevich fired one that way, but Chemago got her stick in the way just in time.
The third period was where the game got interesting. At 12:45, a quick pass from Rombaut to Ottenbreit at the blueline made its way to Tebano, who pocketed the puck into the left corner, tying the game at 1-1. A mere 40 seconds later, Quinnipiac's Kate MacKenzie scored the eventual game-winner, making it 2-1. The Bobcats tried their luck at any empty netter with less than 30 seconds to go, but it went wide.
The Big Green will host Princeton at 3 p.m. on Saturday. This will be their last contest until the end of the month, when Dartmouth heads to Orono for a pair of games against Maine.
