PRINCETON, N.J. – Sophomore John Ernsting and freshman Cam Strong each scored as the Dartmouth men's hockey team played to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink.
That's what you'll see on the scoresheet, but the players of the game for the Big Green (2-1-2, 1-1-2 ECAC Hockey) were defensemen Karan Toor, Tim Shoup, Connor Yau and Cameron Roth.
An early injury to rookie Clay Han and a major penalty and a game misconduct early in the second period assessed to senior and alternate captain Josh Hartley left Dartmouth with four defensemen for the final 39 minutes and change. That quartet did all they could to help goaltender Devin Buffalo make 22 saves in 65 minutes of action through three periods and the five-minute overtime.
Strong, a freshman, scored his team-leading third of the season and second of the weekend on a breakaway 15:44 into the game. Ernsting also scored his second of the weekend, tipping a point shot from Yau at the 17:25 mark of the middle stanza.
But the Tigers (0-4-1, 0-3-1) got a pair of goals from Eric Robinson and 33 saves from Colton Phinney to help Princeton snap a seven-game losing streak against the Green and White dating back to November 2013.
After not tying a single ECAC Hockey game last season, the Big Green have now played to a pair of draws in their first four league games of the year.
The visitors continued their struggles on the power play, going 0-for-4 on the night and are now 0-for-31 this season. The penalty killers were 2-for-3 on the night as Robinson's first of the game came during the major against Hartley.
Yau's assist on the Ernsting goal was his first of the year, while Grant Opperman picked up his second point of the year in his 99th career game.
Dartmouth is back in action Tuesday night at regional rival and former ECAC Hockey travel partner Vermont. Puck drop from Gutterson Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m.
