BURLINGTON, Vt. – A less-than-ideal first period proved to be too much to overcome Tuesday night for the Dartmouth men's hockey team.
Vermont scored four times in front of its home crowd at Gutterson Fieldhouse and then salted the game away for the 5-2 win.
A pair of first-time goal scorers lit the lamp for the Big Green (2-2-2) in the game as sophomore Alex Jasiek notched his first of the season and freshman Will Graber tallied the first of his career.
The Catamounts (6-3-1) got two goals from both Mario Puskarich and Ross Colton in the win. The first from Puskarich chased Dartmouth starter Devin Buffalo from the net after just 10:09 of play. His second less than two minutes later was a welcome-to-college-hockey moment for freshman netminder Adrian Clark, making his first appearance in the Big Green crease.
Clark settled down immediately after and finished with 11 saves in the game as the visitors were the better team in the final two periods, outshooting the Catamounts, 23-8.
Jasiek scored just 1:48 into the second, the lone tally of the period. Graber notched his first goal 8:12 into the third to pull the Big Green to within a pair. That two-goal deficit lasted just 37 seconds, though, as Colton scored his second of the night driving hard to the net.
Picking up their first career points on the Graber tally were freshmen Shane Sellar and Charley Michalowski. John Ernsting pushed his career-best point streak to three games with a helper on the Jasiek marker with Grant Opperman getting a point in his second straight game on the same score.
Overall, the Green held a 34-23 edge in shots on goal, but were unable to capitalize on any of its nine power plays in the game. Vermont was 2-for-7 with the extra skater.
Catamounts goalie Stefanos Lekkas turned aside 32 shots in the win.
Dartmouth now has a 10-day break before returning to action in the Pittsburgh area for a pair of games at Robert Morris on Nov. 26-27.
