PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The road had not been kind to Dartmouth men's hockey this season. That was until Sunday's matinee at PPG Paints Arena – home of the 2016 Stanley Cup Champion Penguins — in downtown Pittsburgh.
The Big Green (3-3-2) picked up their first road win of the year with a 5-2 victory on the NHL sheet of ice at the expense of the hosts from Robert Morris (6-4-2). The win helped Dartmouth earn a split in the weekend series after the Colonials victory Friday night.
Senior Troy Crema scored a pair of power-play goals and had an assist, while junior Corey Kalk scored one and assisted on two more as the linemates combined for six points in the game.
Both players had come into the game with just a pair of points to their credit, but eclipsed that total at the Pens' rink and moved into a tie for the team lead in scoring.
Coming into the game, the Green and White had struggled on the power play this season, failing to score on the first 43 opportunities of 2016-17, but finally broke through with one in each of the first two periods Sunday.
After Kalk and Crema combined to give Dartmouth the 3-0 lead, RMU's Brady Ferguson finally got the home team on the board with his second of the season.
That's when freshman Daniel Warpecha got on the board with his first career goal at the 9:49 mark of the second to push the lead back to three. Warpecha used a beautiful wrap-around to get on the scoresheet with Charley Michalowski and Kevan Kilistoff getting the assists.
A Robert Morris tally early in the third made things close, but the two-goal edge jumped back to three when John Ernsting hit the empty net with 1:28 left in regulation. Ernsting finished a rebound off the post from a Crema shot, missing his bid for the hat trick by just inches.
Devin Buffalo made 22 saves in goal for Dartmouth, including 10 in the third, picking up the win. Francis Marotte stopped 34 in the losing effort for the Colonials as the Big Green outshot their hosts, 39-24.
The five goals were the most in a game by the Green and White this season. Robert Morris was held without a power-play goal all weekend as it was held to an 0-for-3 afternoon by the Dartmouth penalty kill on Sunday.
The Big Green are back in action next weekend, closing out the seven-game road trip with a pair of ECAC Hockey contests at Clarkson and St. Lawrence Friday and Saturday nights.
