PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth men's swimming and diving team opened the 2016 Ivy League Championship on Friday and, after the first day of action, is sitting in eighth place with 161 points.
Dartmouth opened finals on the right foot by breaking the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:20.56). The sixth-place relay was made up of Henry Patrick, Brandon Boval, James Verhagen and Aaron Athanas and beat the record from 2012 by over half a second.
In the 50-yard freestyle, Athanas took 15th in the B final (20.37) and narrowly missed the Dartmouth record, while Boval swam in the C final and was 23rd (20.74).
On the 1-meter diving board, Brett Gillis and AJ Krok finished just two spots apart, with Gillis taking fifth (289.10) and Krok finishing in seventh place (274.75). The Big Green duo combined for 48 points that went towards the team's total and were Dartmouth's highest scorers for the evening. This is the first time in the last 25 years that two male divers have finished in the top eight at one time.
To wrap up the evening, Dartmouth placed sixth in the 400-yard medley relay (3:14.70). Made up of Verhagen, Athanas, David Harmon and Patrick, the Green finished over half a second ahead of Brown in seventh.
In prelims, Carter Jacobsen placed 27th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:32.84). In the 200-yard IM, Logan Briggs was 32nd (1:51.37), Henry Senkfor placed 33rd (1:51.57) and Iain Edmundson touched in 34th place (1:51.67).
Day two will begin at 11 a.m. with the 400-yard IM.
