THIS WEEKEND
After a two-week hiatus, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Michigan, meeting the Wolverines for the first time in program history.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green opened its home schedule on March 5 by dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to Wagner at Scully-Fahey Field, leading for almost the entirety of the game until the visitors took the lead with just 21 seconds remaining in the contest. Wiley Osborne led the team with four goals and was the only Dartmouth player to score multiple points. Four others ended the day with a point apiece. It took almost 12 minutes and a combined 15 shots before the first goal of the game was scored. With 3:47 left in the first, Wagner's Paul DeVita netted an unassisted tally that proved to be the only marker of the quarter. The Green outscored the Seahawks, 3-1, in the second, and all three tallies came from Osborne. His first two goals early in the quarter were scored just eight seconds apart; the first was assisted by Austin Meacham and the second was unassisted. With 5:30 remaining, Wagner tied it at two-all, but Osborne gave Dartmouth the go-ahead just 19 seconds later, with the helper going to Don Stephan. With a 3-2 lead at the start of the third, Dartmouth and Wagner traded goals until two in a row by the Seahawks tied the score at five with 57 ticks left on the clock. With just six seconds remaining in the quarter, Evan Key got his first of the game and his third of the season – an unassisted tally made possible by a long clear by Blair Friedensohn – to give the home team a 6-5 edge heading into the fourth. Defense was the word in the fourth, as neither team allowed much in the way of shots. The first goal of the quarter occurred with 2:36 left, a tally by Billy Martin that tied the score at six-all. With 21 seconds on the clock, Andrew Streilein gave the visitors their first lead since the opening quarter with the only man-up goal of the contest, and that would be an edge that would last until the end of the game.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines enter this weekend's game with a record of 3-3 following very close victories over Colgate (9-8), Delaware (10-7) and Vermont (15-13), some pretty sizeable losses to No. 6 North Carolina (20-10) and No. 5 Brown (22-8) and a closer 12-10 loss to Penn. Kyle Jackson leads Michigan (and is fourth in the nation) with an impressive 20 goals and four assists.
LEADING THE WAY
After a four-point performance against Wagner, Osborne remains on top with 10 points from seven goals and three assists and is the first Big Green player to reach double-digit points.
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan returns for his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces will join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Friedensohn played the entire game against Wagner, making eight saves in the loss. Joe Balaban and Griffin Miller, Dartmouth's rookie goalkeepers, opened their collegiate careers against Denver. Balaban played 43 minutes between the pipes, making eight saves, while Miller replaced him for the final 1:41 and had a pair of stops.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Austin Meacham, Joe Balaban, Griffin Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra.
