THIS WEEKEND
Dartmouth men's lacrosse will look to get its second straight win and its first home victory of the season on Tuesday when it takes on NJIT in a non-conference tilt scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday. This is just the second time that the two teams have met.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green won their first game of 2016 on Saturday, recording double-digit points for the first time this year with a 13-12 victory over the Michigan Wolverines. Four Dartmouth players ended the day with three points apiece. Cam Lee had a trio of tallies, while Evan Key and Richie Loftus had a pair of goals and an assist – the latter of which scoring his first three points of the season. Wiley Osborne had one marker and two helpers. Michigan's only lead of the game was at the very beginning of the contest. The Wolverines opened scoring less than two minutes in, but Osborne evened the score three minutes later. That proved to be the only time the two teams were tied, as four straight Green goals – including one by Lee with a single tick left on the clock – gave the visitors a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter. Dartmouth was held to just one tally in the second, while Michigan got three of its own to make it 6-4 in favor of the Big Green. The Wolverines made it a one-goal game a minute into the third and the teams traded points until Dartmouth sported a 9-7 edge at the end of the third quarter. The Green were able to hold on to their lead thanks to four straight markers to start the fourth. Less than 20 seconds in, Willis Bocock scored his first of the season and, three minutes later, Loftus got his second of the game. Bocock added another with 10:29 to play and Lee closed out Dartmouth's scoring with 8:56 remaining. Michigan went on to net five unanswered goals to make it an incredibly close, 13-12 game, but the Wolverines ran out of time before they were able to tie the score.
SCOUTING NJIT
In its two years of existence, the Highlanders have not won a single game and they enter Tuesday's contest with an 0-9 mark this season. NJIT has not made it to double-digit points yet in 2016 and its biggest loss was by 17 points, which occurred on two occasions. The Highlanders came close to victory twice: a 10-7 loss to VMI in February and a 9-7 loss to Quinnipiac a week later. Aaron Forster leads the team with 12 points (8G, 4A), while Joe Lomeli is second with a team-leading 11 tallies.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE HIGHLANDERS
On April 14, 2015, Dartmouth and NJIT met for the first time ever on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium and the Green walked away with a 7-5 victory. Dartmouth took an early 2-0 lead with a goal by Adam Fishman one minute into the opening quarter and another by Jack Connolly 40 seconds later. Markers by Tyler Baggett with 6:08 remaining and another by Lomeli five minutes later tied the score at two, but Cody George's first collegiate goal with 57 ticks to go gave the Green a 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter. Just one goal was scored in the second; Jack Korzelius netted an unassisted tally with 11:50 to play and, even though a combined seven shots were taken in the remaining minutes, none of them made it past the goalkeepers. The Highlanders tied things up, once again, with a Gabe Giovanello goal with 11:40 to play and a Liam Derkasch marker with 39 seconds left in the third quarter, making the score 4-4. The Big Green got one ahead with 13:47 remaining in regulation following a tally by Billy Heidt, but Derkasch would tie the score less than 40 seconds later. Dartmouth's defense worked in overdrive for the last 13 minutes of action, as this was NJIT's final goal of the game. Korzelius scored twice more two minutes apart to give the visitors a comfortable lead to last until the final horn.
LEADING THE WAY
Following another three-point performance against Michigan, Osborne remains on top with 13 points from eight goals and five assists, leading the team in all three categories. Korzelius is next with nine points (6G, 3A) and Key is right behind him with 8 points (5G, 3A). Austin Meacham is first with 18 ground balls, while Don Stephan is 35-for-80 at the X (.438).
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan returns for his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Friedensohn picked up his first win of his senior season in the victory over Michigan. In almost 54 minutes of action, he made eight saves, including a number of key stops to keep Dartmouth on top for the entirety of the contest. Joe Balaban also saw a few minutes of playing time against the Wolverines, making a save to help the cause. The Green's other rookie goalkeeper Griffin Miller, opened his collegiate career against Denver. Balaban played 43 minutes between the pipes, making eight saves, while Miller replaced him for the final 1:41 and had a pair of stops.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Balaban, Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
