Dartmouth Defeats Stanford 4-1, in Extra Innings

STANFORD, Calif. – After the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning, the Dartmouth softball team defeated Stanford, 4-1 in eight innings on Tuesday night.

The Big Green are now 7-8, while the Cardinal fall to 11-11.

In what was pitchers duel in the Golden State, Dartmouth finally broke the game open in the sixth inning. Junior Karen Chaw led the inning off with walk, as sophomore Claire Bird pinch ran for Chaw. With one out, sophomore Tiffany Dyson knocked in the first run of the game for the Big Green with an RBI single.

Senior Morgan McCalmon did not allow a Stanford run until the top of the seventh when Whitney Burks led the inning off with a solo home run to center field. The following Cardinal batter singled, but McCalmon was able to get out of the inning sending the game into extra innings. She finished her day in the circle with five strikeouts, allowing just seven hits and one walk, to improve to 5-3.

In the extra frame, McEachern reached base with a two-out single and sophomore Lourlin Lara walked. Morgan Martinelli was the next batter, who hit a double down the left field line to score the eventual game-winning run. Dartmouth added to their lead when junior Maddie Damore reached on an error, scoring Lara.

A Chaw single to left field added one more run for the Big Green as they took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the eight.

Sophomore Breanna Ethridge came into pitch in the eighth, striking out two consecutive batters, after giving up a lead off walk. Ethridge surrendered two more walks to load the bases. With two outs and the bases loaded, Burks flew out to right field to end the game, as Ethridge earned her third save of the season. Carolyn Lee took the loss for Stanford after giving up seven hits and an earned run through six innings.

Dartmouth will return to the diamond this weekend when the Big Green compete in the Aggie Spring Swing Invitational in Davis, California.
