THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will open Ivy League play in the same way it has done since 2010: against Harvard. The Big Green will head to Cambridge to take on the No. 14/15 Crimson on Saturday at 3 p.m. The contest will be aired live on NESNplus and the Ivy League Digital Network.
LAST TIME OUT
After leading for the majority of the game, Dartmouth was defeated by NJIT, 10-7, in the Green's second home game of the season on Saturday. The victory gave the Highlanders their first win in their two years of existence. Wiley Osborne was the star of the afternoon, scoring six of Dartmouth's seven goals. The Green got on the board first, courtesy of Osborne's ninth of the season less than five minutes into the first. Within three minutes, NJIT had tied the score and taken back the lead with one more, but Osborne made it two-all with 5:30 to play. The Highlanders scored the last tally of the quarter with 2:12 remaining to give NJIT a one-goal lead going into the second. The visitors held on to that 3-2 lead until halfway through the second, when three unanswered goals gave the Green a 5-3 lead. Osborne tied the score at 3-3 with a shot just under the crossbar and then put Dartmouth back on top three minutes later. With 4:44 left, the Big Green got their first and only goal scored by someone other than Osborne, a quick shot to the left by Richie Loftus. NJIT's lone goal of the quarter came less than two minutes later to make it a 5-4 game. Just eight seconds into the third quarter, Osborne got number five of the day to give Dartmouth a 6-4 lead that would not last long, as NJIT got its fifth soon after. The Highlanders scored again with three minutes left on the clock and the two teams would enter the final 15 minutes tied at 6-6. NJIT netted four unanswered goals in the fourth to give the visitors a 10-6 edge with just five minutes remaining in the game. With 1:44 to go, Osborne scored his sixth of the day to make it a three-point game, but the Highlanders' defense prevented any more goals after that point.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
Harvard had a strong start to 2016, winning its first four games by very small margins: No. 20 Villanova (13-12), Holy Cross (11-10), UMass (10-9) and No. 4 Duke (14-9). Since the upset over the Blue Devils on March 5, however, the season took a bit of a turn and the Crimson dropped their next four games to Bryant (12-9), Penn State (13-12), No. 5 Brown (11-8) and Boston University (9-8). Devin Dwyer leads Harvard in goals (25), assists (16) and points (41).
LAST TIME AGAINST HARVARD
Anyone who attended the game between The Big Green and the Crimson on March 21, 2015 at Scully-Fahey Field could attest to how thrilling it was. Dartmouth was the underdog, but did not let that stop it and ended up upsetting No. 15/16 Harvard, 12-11, in the second overtime period. That was the first time since 2011 that the Green had defeated the Crimson. The teams traded goals the whole game, always staying within one or two markers. Any time Dartmouth would start to pull ahead, Harvard would make it a one-goal game. Ian Ardrey made it an 11-10 contest with 2:44 remaining in regulation and, with just 14 seconds to go, his fifth of the day tied the score at 11 and sent it to overtime, the first of the year for the Big Green. A key save by Harvard's Bryan Moore with a split second left in the first overtime period kept Dartmouth from getting that pivotal 12th goal. With 2:21 left in the second overtime period, leading goal scorer Jack Korzelius netted his 10th of the season to end the game with a victory.
LEADING THE WAY
With his six goals against NJIT, Osborne remains first on the team in goals (14) and points (19) and tied for first in assists (5) with Korzelius. Osborne has already surpassed his goal totals from his first two years on the team – scoring 10 as a freshman and 12 last season – and the Green still has nine more games to go. Don Stephan and Austin Meacham are tied for first with 20 ground balls apiece, while Stephan leads in face-offs, going 50-for-100 at the X.
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan returns for his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Against NJIT, Blair Friedensohn had four ground balls and five saves in the loss. The Green's rookie goalies have both seen time in net so far this season. Joe Balaban saw playing time against Denver and Michigan and has nine saves, while Griffin Miller had a pair of stops against Denver.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Balaban, Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
