DAVIS, Calif. – The Dartmouth Softball defeated Pacific, 3-1 for its eighth consecutive win before falling to UC Davis, 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 10-9, while the Tigers fall to 14-13 and the Aggies improve to 11-13.
In Game 1, Dartmouth sent sophomore Breanna Ethridge to the circle as the Loganville, Georgia native picked up her third win to improve to 3-3 on the season. The contest remained scoreless until the top of the third when senior Katie McEachern laid down a bunt-single and stole second to get into scoring positon. Pacific's pitcher, Kenya Lindstrom walked two consecutive batters to load the bases.
Junior Maddie Damore reached base on a fielder's choice as McEachern was thrown out at the plate. The next batter, junior Karen Chaw made it to first on a fielder's choice and tallied an RBI when sophomore Lourlin Lara scored the Big Green's first run of the afternoon. Later in the inning with two outs, freshman Morgan Martinelli scored on an illegal pitch by Lindstrom, giving Dartmouth a 2-0 lead.
After a scoreless fourth, the Tigers cut their opponents advantage in half when Cassidy Gustafson homered to left field to lead off the fifth.
The Big Green protected their lead in the sixth when Chaw hit a lead off double to center field. Senior Brianna Lohmann pinch ran for Chaw and scored when freshman Miranda Greig singled, but was thrown out trying to stretch the base hit into a double. Megan Walters came into pitch for Lindstrom, but the damage had been done as Lindstrom took the loss to fall to 4-4.
Senior Morgan McCalmon came into pitch in the bottom of the sixth, thwarting any attempt of a Pacific comeback to earn her third save of the year. Gustafson led off with a double to right-center to lead off the seventh, but after a pop up to second base and back-to-back strikeouts, Dartmouth secured it's eighth consecutive victory.
Game two pitted the Big Green against the host school, UC Davis, as freshman Lauren Stone got the start for Dartmouth. The Aggies got after it early in the top of the first with two outs, Alexis Carney singled down the left field line. The following batter Ashley Lotoszynski hit a double to left, as Carney scored for the 1-0 lead.
The Big Green responded when McEachern singled through the right side and advanced to third on a Lara base hit. With one out, McEachern scored on Chaw's sacrifice fly to tie the game, 1-1.
A scoreless second inning gave way to the third when the Aggies retook the lead after a Lotoszynski single to center field which scored Brianna Warner. UC Davis added to its lead in the fifth with a two-out rally that plated two more runs for the host school. Taylor Peters singled to third and scored on a Carney double down the left field line. Carney crossed home plate after another base hit by Lotoszynski.
Up 4-1, the Aggies kept the pressure on in the sixth with two more runs after Kelly Zboralske doubled to lead off the inning. Christina Guidry followed up with a bunt-single as Zboralske advanced to third. After an error, Zboralske scored with two outs in the inning, prior to Guidry stealing home to give UC Davis a 6-1 lead.
McEachern singled in the sixth, but Dartmouth could not rally, as the Big Green were retired in order in the seventh by Aggies' pitcher Andrea Reynolds, who improved to 3-6. Stone pitched a complete game for Dartmouth and took the loss, dropping to 1-3 on the season.
