TAMPA, Fla. — Two South Florida pitchers held visiting Dartmouth scoreless on a single hit as the Bulls defeated the Big Green, 4-0, at USF Baseball Stadium on Sunday. Tyler Dietrich drove in a pair of runs to help USF (14-11) win the three-game series, two games to one, with each contest featuring a shutout.
Junior Ben Socher collected the lone hit for the Big Green (5-13) with a single up the middle with one out in the sixth, ending the no-hit bid of Bull right-hander Joe Cavallaro. Aside from two Dartmouth hitters reaching on errors, senior Adam Gauthier was the only other Big Green batter to reach base in Cavallaro's seven-inning stint, drawing a walk to start the fourth.
Cavallaro (4-0) threw 96 pitches to earn the victory, striking out nine in the process and allowing just Gauthier to advance as far as second base. After issuing the free pass in the third, he retired 15 of the next 16 batters, yielding only Socher's clean single back through the box. Tommy Eveld completed the shutout, setting down the final six batters of the game — four on strikes — after walking freshmen Steffen Torgersen to start the eighth.
Dartmouth senior Michael Danielak (1-2) took the loss, surrendering hree earned runs over five-plus frames although he matched a career high with nine strikeouts.
After Coco Montes yanked a one-out single through the left side in the second inning, David Villar beat out an infield hit. Danielak got the second out on strikes, but Dietrich poked a single to right that allowed Montes to score for a 1-0 lead.
It was still a 1-0 game in the fifth with two out and nobody on when the Bulls mounted a rally. Two walks, a wild pitch and a balk put runners on second and third before Joe Genord tapped a pitch in front of the plate and beat it out for an infield RBI single and a 2-0 advantage. Danielak limited the damage with another strikeout to retire the side.
In the sixth, the first USF hitter reached on a throwing error, took second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a bunt single. Again Dietrich provided a run-scoring hit with a single between short and third, ending Danielak's afternoon having thrown 97 pitches.
Sophomore southpaw Marc Bachman took them mound, and Garrett Zech promptly stole third. When Kevin Merrell hit into a force out, Zech crossed the plate with the fourth and final run.
Dietrich finished the day 2-for-3 with his two RBIs, while Luke Maglich also had two of the Bulls' eight hits, all against Danielak.
Having finished three trips to the state of Florida, featuring 18 games, Dartmouth will finally play its home opener on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. when Quinnipiac (6-14), which has lost its last six contests. The game will be streamed live via Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network with Wayne Young calling all of the action. Visit ILDN.tv for information on how to subscribe.
