LAST TIME OUT VERSUS HARVARD
The Big Green opened Ivy League play against the No. 14/15 Crimson on Saturday, falling by a score of 18-8. Wiley Osborne led the team with a pair of goals and three assists, while Richie Loftus and Jack Korzelius had two goals of their own. Harvard opened the game by scoring four unanswered goals in the first 15 minutes, but a tally by Loftus with seven seconds remaining in the first quarter got Dartmouth on the board and made it 4-1 in favor of the home team. The Crimson outscored the Green 6-2 in the second. Cam Lee netted the first goal of the quarter, a man-up marker scored 20 seconds after a Harvard penalty. Like he did in the opening quarter, Loftus waited until almost the last second to strike, getting goal number two of the game with just nine seconds to go. Joe Balaban replaced Blair Friedensohn between the pipes in the third and, during that quarter, Harvard scored five goals to Dartmouth's two; Korzelius got the Green's second man-up tally late in the quarter, while Austin Duncan scored his first goal of the season with 54 seconds left on the clock. The Crimson sported a 15-5 edge heading into the fourth quarter. Harvard got a pair of goals 20 seconds apart to open the fourth, but Dartmouth scored three unassisted goals in a row to slightly lessen the Crimson's lead. Korzelius netted his second of the contest and his eighth of the season with 11:43 to play, while Osborne got a pair of tallies in the final seven minutes of play. Harvard scored once more with 4:36 remaining to end the game.
SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS
Vermont enters Tuesday's contest with a record of 4-5. The story of the season is close games: four of the Catamounts' nine contests – including the last three in a row – have been decided by a single point. On March 12, Vermont had a 9-8 victory over Sacred Heart, but came out on the losing side of things 10 days later, falling to Hofstra, 13-12. Over the weekend, the Catamounts took down UMass Lowell at home, 11-9, to win its first conference game of the year. Ian MacKay is first on the team in goals (24) and points (38), while Cam Milligan leads in assists (17) to sit closely behind MacKay in points (30).
LAST TIME AGAINST VERMONT
For the second contest in a row, Korzelius netted the game-winner, helping the Green defeat the Catamounts, 16-5, at Scully-Fahey Field on March 24, 2015. Dartmouth struck first, getting on the board just over a minute into the game with a goal by Korzelius, but Vermont quickly took the lead by scoring three straight. The two teams traded points back and forth until the Green went on a five-goal run following two markers by Adam Fishman and one apiece by Billy Heidt, Osborne and Patrick Campbell to end the first quarter with a 7-5 edge. After being held scoreless for the last six minutes of the opening quarter, the Catamounts opened the second with three consecutive tallies to give the visitors an 8-7 advantage, but after a goal by Korzelius with 10:34 remaining tied the score at eight, Dartmouth took the lead and ran with it, wrapping up the first half with an 11-9 advantage. Vermont's Dyson White tied the score at 11 with 11:47 to go in the third and it was not until there was 5:13 left to play that another goal was scored, a Milligan marker that put Vermont one ahead of Dartmouth. The Catamounts held the Big Green scoreless throughout the third, while finding the back of the net three times themselves. Taylor Topousis netted his second of the season with 12:09 to go, but with Vermont goals occurring before and after his tally, the visitors remained two ahead with a score of 14-12 with 10:36 to play. From there, things got interesting. Jack Connolly tied the score at 14, while Osborne put the home team one goal ahead with 5:38 to play. Vermont found the back of the net a minute later, but Korzelius scored with 3:24 left to give Dartmouth a 16-15 lead, an edge that would last until the final horn.
LEADING THE WAY
Following his five-point performance against Harvard, Osborne maintains his leads in goals (16), assists (8) and points (24). Korzelius is first in man-up goals (2), Austin Meacham and Don Stephan are tied for the team-lead in ground balls (22), and Stephan is top in faceoffs (57-for-117, .487). In the Ivy League standings, Osborne is fourth in shots (50), just five outside of first, and Friedensohn is third in goals against (61).
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Balaban, Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan is in his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Both Friedensohn and Balaban saw time in net against Harvard. Friedensohn started things off by playing the first two quarters, making seven saves in all. Balaban took over for the remaining half an hour and had six saves of his own. The Green's other rookie goalkeeper, Griffin Miller, opened his collegiate career against Denver and had a pair of stops.
