HANOVER, N.H. — After 18 games outside of Hanover, the Dartmouth baseball team (5-13) finally gets a chance to play at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park when the Quinnipiac Bobcats (6-14) come to town for a game on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
The Big Green played each of their first 18 games in the state of Florida, including three games against the top-ranked Florida Gators and a total of 11 contests against teams that played in an NCAA Regional last year.
Facing such stiff competition, Dartmouth has struggled at the plate out of the gate with a .221 team batting average and an average of 2.8 runs per game. But those numbers are similar to last year's squad after 18 games, and that team went on to post a 16-4 record in Ivy League play to win the Rolfe Division for an eighth-consecutive season.
The Big Green pitching staff is rounding into shape as senior Duncan Robinson — the 2015 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year — was just named the conference's Pitcher of the Week for throwing a complete-game, four-hit shutout at South Florida on Saturday. The projected four-man rotation for league weekends boasts a solid 3.42 ERA over 73.2 innings thus far with 72 strikeouts, and the top two relievers have a combined ERA of 2.27 in 31.2 innings.
Quinnipiac won the last meeting two years ago, 11-5, snapping Dartmouth's seven-game win streak in the series. Overall, the Big Green are 10-6 against the Bobcats since the first encounter in 2001.
The tentative starters for this game will be right-hander Clay Chatham (0-3, 7.56) for Dartmouth against right-hander Andrew Workman (0-2, 12.10), though both teams will likely go to the bullpen early to save arms for conference play this weekend. The Big Green will open up Ivy League play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Princeton at noon.
