Dartmouth Hosts UMass Lowell Tuesday; Cornell Doubleheader Rescheduled

HANOVER, N.H. — Having won four of the five games during its current homestand, the Dartmouth baseball team (9-17) will try to conclude this stretch at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park with another victory on Tuesday afternoon when the UMass Lowell River Hawks (13-14) are scheduled to come to Hanover.

The Big Green also announced the doubleheader at Cornell that was postponed on April 3 has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at noon. With the addition to the schedule, the game at Boston College on Tuesday, April 19 has been canceled.

Dartmouth won three of its four Ivy League games over the weekend, including a doubleheader sweep of the three-time defending Ivy League champion, Columbia, on Sunday. Three of the four wins were by a single run, with two of those coming in walk-off style.The Big Green got a 150-foot sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Penn on Saturday, 2-1, and sophomore Justin Fowler capped a three-run ninth to rally for a 7-6 victory over the Lions in the nightcap on Sunday.

Freshman Matt Feinstein leads Dartmouth with a .328 average at the plate, but it has been junior Michael Ketchmark who has been the most lethal bat in the lineup of late. The first baseman has a slash line of .292/.337/.472, and in the 7-6 win yesterday, he went 3-for-4 with a double, his fourth home run of the year, two runs scored and four RBIs.

Ketchmark, with a .438 average this homestand, is not the only Big Green hitter coming to life at the plate with seniors Nick Ruppert (.417 avg.) and Adam Gauthier (.615 OBP) helping the offense rebound from a slow start to the season.

Aside from the one loss in this stretch, the pitching staff has been stellar, yielding just nine runs in the four victories. Junior reliever Chris Burkholder has not allowed a run in his three appearances spanning seven innings while striking out seven, picking a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross and nailing down the save in a 3-1 win over Columbia. Seniors Duncan Robinson and Beau Sulser both surrendered just one run in their starts over the weekend to earn wins, while sophomore reliever Patrick Peterson had a win and a save like Burkholder.

UMass Lowell has won three of its last four games, including a series victory over Binghamton over the weekend. Joe Consolmagno is the table-setter for the offense with a .419 on-base percentage and a team-high 14 runs while Steve Passatempo is the run producer with six of the River Hawks' nine home runs and 24 RBIs. As a team UML is hitting just .230 with a .295 slugging percentage, but likes to put pressure on the defense with 44 stolen bases in 54 attempts.

The pitching staff has been the River Hawks' strength with a 3.21 ERA with Andrew Ryan leading the way at 2.11 with 34 strikeouts in 42.2 innings. Dartmouth will face freshman left-hander Ricky Constant who is 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA in four starts, but opponents have hit just .196 against him.

Big Green head coach Bob Whalen has not announced his starter for the game, which will be streamed live via Big Green Insider on the Ivy League Digital Network on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
