THIS WEEKEND
Just four games remain on the 2016 schedule for the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team. On Saturday, the Big Green will head to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers. The 3 p.m. game will be carried live on the Ivy League Digital Network and ESPN3.
LAST TIME OUT
After a close first half, No. 1 Yale scored nine goals in the third to lead the Bulldogs to a 15-5 victory over the Green at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday. Dartmouth kept Yale off the board for the first five minutes of the game, thanks in part to a handful of big saves by Joe Balaban, who has been seeing more and more time in net as the season has progressed. With 9:45 to go, Michael Keasey got past Balaban for the first goal of the day. An unassisted tally by Wiley Osborne with 2:45 left in the first tied the score at one-all, and that is how it would stay for the remainder of the quarter. A minute into the second, the Bulldogs broke the tie and soon made it 3-1. There was a five-minute quiet period, but a man-up goal by the Bulldogs with 6:15 remaining gave the visitors a three-goal lead. Will Randell cut that edge to two with his third of the season following a pass from Osborne, but a huge save by Balaban resulted in another goal for the Bulldogs when the ball rebounded directly to Michael Bonacci, making it 5-2 in Yale's favor. The Bulldogs scored nine unanswered goals and kept the Big Green scoreless for the entirety of the third, giving Yale a 14-2 advantage. Dartmouth outscored Yale, 3-1, in the fourtj. After 20 minutes of scoreless play, Jack Korzelius picked up the ball behind the net and, while falling, shot to the left of the goalie (14-3). Yale got one of its own shortly afterward, but Korzelius scored his second unassisted marker of the quarter with 11:02 to play (15-4). Exactly 10 minutes later, Osborne got his second of the day and 18th of the year – a man-up marker – with the assist going to Randell.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Princeton and Dartmouth are tied for sixth in the Ivy League with their winless conference records. Although the Tigers had big losses to both Penn (20-10) and Brown (19-8), they were one of the only teams to put real pressure on Yale, falling to the Bulldogs by a score of 11-10 back in March. Princeton played its final non-conference game of 2016 on Tuesday, defeating Lehigh, 13-6.
LAST TIME AGAINST PRINCETON
On April 11, 2015, Adam Fishman scored four times, but a strong No. 14 Princeton squad registered 11 second-half goals to defeat Dartmouth, 16-5, in Ivy League play at Scully-Fahey Field. The story of the contest was turnovers as the Tiger defense forced the home team into committing 21, while they themselves committed 14. Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead early in the opening quarter on Fishman's first of the day from Korzelius at 13:28. Princeton scored the next three tallies in an eight-minute span before the teams exchanged the next two goals. Each team scored just once in the second, as Fishman completed his hat trick midway through the frame. Dartmouth was holding its own through 30 minutes, as the Tigers possessed the ball for a large portion of the half. Princeton held a 19-12 advantage in shots, but it was the Big Green's defense stepping up and moving the ball out of their end as the squad went 8-of-11 in clears. In the third quarter, it was all Princeton, as the Tigers netted seven goals in 15 minutes. Dartmouth's only tally of the quarter came in a man-up situation as Cam Lee scored unassisted to make it an 8-4 contest. Princeton would score four more times before the horn sounded. Trailing, 12-4, Fishman received a pass from Adam Hull for his second helper of the game a minute and 40 seconds into the final quarter. The Tigers would score four more goals before the game ended, including two in the last two minutes.
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan is in his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Joe Balaban, Griffin Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
LEADING THE WAY
Osborne remains the team-leader in all three categories: goals (18), assists (13) and points (31). He has already surpassed his career-best 12 goals from last season and is just two points away from a career-high, which was also set last year. With his two goals against Yale, Korzelius is now second on the team with 15 points (11G, 4A). Austin Meacham is first in ground balls (35) and Don Stephan leads in faceoffs (76-for-173, .439).
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Three of the Big Green goalies saw time in net against Yale. Balaban started things off and played the opening 41 minutes, making 15 saves in all. Blair Friedensohn replaced him for the next 16 minutes and had three saves of his own. Miller played the remaining two and a half minutes and did not have to make a stop during that time. So far this season, Balaban has played 212 minutes, has made 56 saves and has a .471 save percentage. Friedensohn has seen 385 minutes of action, has made 68 saves and has a .473 save percentage. Miller has five minutes of time under his belt, has made a pair of saves and has a 1.000 save percentage. Dartmouth's other goalie, Ty Vandenberg, has not seen time in net yet this season.
