PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Dartmouth softball team swept Brown 2-1 and 4-2 to remain the only undefeated team in Ivy League play in Providence on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Green are now 23-10 overall, 12-0 in conference play, while the Bears drop to 16-16, 5-7.
Game 1 saw a rematch in the circle of yesterday's pitching matchup between Dartmouth's senior ace Morgan McCalmon and Brown's top hurler, Katie Orona. McCalmon once again got the win with zero walks and two strikeouts to improve to 14-3 on the season. With the victory, the Norman, Oklahoma native is just one win away from tying Kristen Rumley's 15-win season a year ago when she took home Pitcher of the Year honors.
The Big Green bat's have been hot in the opening frames as of late and that trend continued again on Sunday when Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Lourlin Lara reached on an error and advanced to third when senior Kelsey Miller was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double. With one out, freshman Morgan Martinelli hit her team-leading 11th double of the season to right-center, scoring Lara.
In the top of the second, the Big Green threatened to add to their lead when they loaded the bases, but could not get anything across. Dartmouth did add to its advantage in the third when Martinelli led off with a single up the middle and scored off of senior Katie McEachern's double to left field, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Bears got one run back in the fifth when Annie Scarangella led off with a single to third and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Yeram Park smacked a double to right field, scoring Scarangella from second.
After pitching out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth, McCalmon shut the door on Brown in the seventh retiring the Bears in order to end the ball game.
In Game 2 The Big Green sent sophomore Breanna Ethridge to the circle, where she gave up just one walk and struck out two over five innings of work.
A scoreless first gave way to the second when Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead when junior Maddie Damore scored on senior Brianna Lohmann's single to left field.
The Big Green broke the game open in the fourth, as Damore continued her success at the plate with a lead off double to left-center. She advanced to third on freshman Kassidy Williams' single and crossed home plate when freshman Taylor Ward grounded out to second. After Lohmann walked and Lara singled to the shortstop, Miller reached base on an error by the third baseman which also plated two runs for Dartmouth.
With the Big Green up 4-0, the Bears got one run back in the fourth after a lead off single and double. Sarah Syrop singled down the left field line, advancing to second on the throw as Christina Andrews scored. After a couple of scoreless innings, freshman Lauren Stone came in to pitch in relief for Dartmouth where she surrendered a walk and retired three batters.
The Big Green left two runners on base in the seventh and protected a 4-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning where a Brown comeback fell just short. After a leadoff double by Janet Leung, Park grounded out, advancing her teammate to third. On the next play, Ashli Lotz grounded out to first, but Leung scored which cut Dartmouth's lead to 4-2. Stone remained composed getting Andrews to line out to to Miller to preserve the victory and earn her second save of the season.
The Big Green return home next weekend for a four-game series with Yale at home on Saturday and Sunday.
