THIS WEEKEND
A big game is ahead for the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team, which will host Yale – the number one team in the country – in a 1 p.m. Ivy league contest at Scully-Fahey Field on Saturday.
LAST TIME OUT
Playing its first Ivy League game on home field, the Big Green fell to the Cornell Big Red by a score of 19-4 on a sunny, yet chilly, Saturday afternoon. Dartmouth dipped to 1-8 and 0-2 in conference play, while Cornell improved to 4-4 and 1-2. A pair of Red goals scored a minute apart in the early stages of the first quarter gave the visitors an early lead, but the Green soon closed that gap to tie the game with two of their own from Richie Loftus and Evan Key, with both assists going to Wiley Osborne. The teams remained tied for the next five minutes, but Cornell scored three consecutive markers in the final minutes to make it a 5-2 game. The Big Red dominated the second, scoring seven more unanswered goals to give the visitors a 12-2 lead courtesy of a 10-0 run that had started halfway through the previous quarter. With 2:41 left on the clock, Jack Korzelius ended the Red's run to give the Green its only goal of the quarter, but another one by Cornell made it 13-3. A minute into the third, the Big Red found the back of the net again, but Key's second of the game with 11:03 to play gave Dartmouth its fourth of the day (14-4). Cornell scored just once more, being held to two goals in the third. The Red outscored the Big Green, 4-0, in the fourth to lead the visitors to victory.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
More than halfway through the season, just one nationally ranked team remains undefeated: Yale. The Bulldogs were ranked ninth in the pre-season rankings and slowly made their way up the list, settling in as the No. 1 team in the country last week. Yale has had a couple of close games: on March 26, it defeated Princeton, 11-10 and, the following Saturday, had an 11-10 overtime win over Penn. Most recently, however, it had a 19-3 win over Sacred Heart. Ben Reeves leads the team in all three categories: goals (25), assists (21) and points (46). He is tied for second in the country in points per game (5.00).
LAST TIME AGAINST YALE
On April 4, 2015, the Big Green dropped a 10-4 decision to No. 11 Yale at Reese Stadium. Osborne had a hand in all four of Dartmouth's goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other two. Key and Cam Lee netted the other two tallies, while KC Beard ended the day with an assist. Yale scored four times in the first quarter and held Dartmouth to zero goals in the opening 15 minutes. Osborne got the visitors on the board with 10:54 remaining in the second to lessen the Bulldogs' lead to three, but the home team went on to score two more to increase its lead. With 2:15 to play, Key netted his third of the season following a pass from Osborne and Yale entered the second half with a 6-3 lead. A combined six goals were scored in the second half, all of which occurred in the third quarter. Osborne netted his second of the game and ninth of the season with 13:14 remaining and that was followed by three straight Yale goals. Lee found the back of the net with 1:10 to play, while the Bulldogs' Jeff Cimbalista scored the last goal of the third with eight seconds remaining. In the final quarter, Dartmouth had eight shots to Yale's four, but neither team was able to get another goal during that time.
LEADING THE WAY
Osborne remains the team-leader in all three categories: goals (16), assists (12) and points (28). He has already surpassed his career-best 12 goals from last season and is just five points away from a career-high, which was also set last year. Loftus is the next Big Green player to reach double-digit goals and is second with 10. He and Korzelius are tied for second with 13 points. Austin Meacham is first in ground balls (32) and Don Stephan leads in faceoffs (71-for-158, .449).
BEHIND THE BENCH
Brendan Callahan is in his second season at Dartmouth after being named the 10th head coach in the program's 89-year history in August of 2014. Two new faces join Callahan on the sidelines in 2016: Scott Hackett-Dalgliesh and Brian Small. Hackett-Dalgliesh came to Hanover from UMass Lowell, where he was an assistant coach for the team's first year as a Division I team, while Small served as head coach at John Carroll for the Blue Streaks' first two seasons as a varsity program.
FRESH FACES
Fourteen of the 40 players on the roster will be donning the Green and White uniform for the first time. Making up the Class of 2019 are Cameron Nolting, David Marshall, Harrison Lane, Will Randell, Bo Forsen, Jack Auteri, Meacham, Joe Balaban, Griffin Miller, Matt Tanenblatt, Landon McKenzie, Armin Mortazavi and Tyler Haskell. Also making his Big Green debut is sophomore Steve Satterthwaite, who played one season and red-shirted another at Hofstra. Leading the freshmen so far in 2016 is Randell with his two goals and two assists.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Three Big Green goalies saw time in net against Cornell. Balaban started things off and played the opening 32 minutes, making seven saves in all. Blair Friedensohn replaced him for the next 26 and had six saves of his own. Miller played the remaining minute and did not have to make a stop during that time. So far this season, Balaban has played 171 minutes, has made 41 saves and has a .446 save percentage. Friedensohn has seen 365 minutes of action, has made 58 saves and has a .472 save percentage. Miller has 2:30 under his belt, has made a pair of saves and has a 1.000 save percentage. Dartmouth's other goalie, Ty Vandenberg, has not seen time in net yet this season.
