HANOVER, N.H. — At the conclusion of the annual Green-White spring football game on Saturday, Robert L. Blackman Head Football Coach Buddy Teevens announced that seniors Brandon Cooper, Dave Morrison and Folarin Orimolade will serve as the team captains for the upcoming 2016 season.
Orimolade, a 5-11, 240-pound linebacker from Burtonsville, Maryland, was a first-team All-Ivy selection this past year as he finished second in the league in both sacks and tackles for a loss, while leading the loop in forced fumbles.
A defensive lineman, the 6-1, 270-pound Cooper from Grand Prairie, Texas, has been a key reserve throughout his career with 35 tackles to his credit. This fall he is expected to step into a starting role with the graduation of the entire starting defensive line.
Morrison, a 6-5, 305-pound offensive lineman from Latham, New York, started nine of the 10 games this past fall and has played in all but two games throughout his career. He will serve as the anchor of the offensive line while moving over to right tackle.
With no tackling in the spring game per team policy, the offense had more of an opportunity to shine. Both Bruce Dixon and Jack Heneghan helped their cases to fill the void left by record-setting quarterback Dalyn Williams with Dixon getting most of his snaps with the first team and Heneghan with the second. Both managed to connect with a number of targets, particularly wide receivers Joseph Cook and Emmanuel Soto, and three veteran tight ends in Cameron Skaff, Cam Poole and Stephen Johnston.
In the backfield, Rashaad Cooper displayed his speed, and Miles Smith was able to find space to run as well. Both Ryder Stone and Abrm McQuarters saw limited play, but the latter did have a couple of catches on swing passes for solid gains.
Morrisnon and the rest of the offensive line, both first and second teams, operated efficiently up front, leaving the coaching staff optimistic about their performance in the upcoming season.
While the one of the nation's top defenses graduated a number of key players, the Big Green still had a number of veterans gracing the field in Lucas Bavaro, Danny McManus, Jackson Perry, Alex McCrory and others. While a dropoff in defensive production is inevitable after leading the country in fewest points allowed per game, the return of Orimolade and so many key reserves have the coaches certain Dartmouth will still put a strong defensive unit on the field.
Darius George picked off a pair of passes in the secondary, while Kyran McKinney-Crudden had an interception as well. Both Nick Tomkins and Jackson Perry impressed with a combination of explosive power and quickness on the defensive line as well.
