HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth senior co-captain Thomas Roulis was selected as the Ivy League's co-Player of the Week as announced by the conference office today. He shared the honor with Penn junior catcher Tim Graul, who earned the award for the second straight week. This is the second Player of the Week award bestowed upon Roulis in his career, and the first by a Big Green player since he garnered the distinction more than two years ago. He was also selected as the Ivy League Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
A native of New Hyde Park, New York, Roulis hit safely in all five games last week with at least two knocks in four of the contests as he led Dartmouth (18-24, 11-9 Ivy) to four victories while hitting a robust .556 (10-for-18). First he singled, doubled and drove in a run in a 5-3 victory over Siena before helping the Big Green win three of the four games against Harvard to make up two games in the Rolfe Division standings of the Ivy League to tie Yale for first place and force a one-game playoff, to be played in New Haven, Connecticut, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Roulis went 2-for-3 in the opener at Harvard with a two-run single in the sixth that proved to be the difference in a 3-1 victory, and in the nightcap of the doubleheader added a single and a double in a 2-1 triumph. Back in Hanover on Tuesday, he came up big after the Big Green dropped the first game, stroking three of the team's seven hits with his third double of the week and scoring a key run in the 3-1 win, which elevated Dartmouth into the tie atop the standings. In addition to his prowess at the plate, Roulis fielded his position at shortstop flawlessly in 24 chances to contribute to the low-scoring affairs.
The winner of the playoff game will advance to the Ivy League Championship Series the following weekend, to be hosted by the Gehrig Division champion, Princeton. A doubleheader will be played on Saturday, May 14, and a single game (if necessary) the following day.
Notes: Other Big Green players to earn a weekly award from the conference office this year were freshman catcher Rob Emery as the Rookie of the Week on March 22, senior right-hander Duncan Robinson as the Pitcher of the Week on March 29, and junior right-hander Chris Burkholder as the Pitcher of the Week on April 12.
