Big Green Conclude Road Swing with Loss at Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After yesterday's historic and thrilling victory over Princeton, the ninth-ranked Dartmouth men's squash team took on No. 7 Penn, where the Quakers emerged with an 8-1 victory in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Carson Spahr got the first round going for the Big Green with a crucial win, after he took an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore Matt Giegerich and junior Jack Harvey played their opponents admirably, but neither could secure a game, as each fell 3-0.

Junior Brian Giegerich opened up the second round of matches with a tight three game loss. Though Giegerich lost in three, he nearly tied the match as two games were decided in extra points.

Sophomore Sam Epley competed well, but fell in straight games, as junior Alvin Heumann wrapped up the second round with a 3-0 loss to a tough opponent.

With Dartmouth trailing 5-1, the match was decided, but the Big Green looked to add to their win total. Senior captain Glen Brickman, who secured the winning match against the Tigers, sought to continue his strong play, but ultimately dropped his match, 3-1. Freshman Brandon De Otaduy looked to continue to turn heads with his exceptional play, but was unable to do so against a very tough opponent.

Other than Spahr's early win, the highlight of the day belonged to freshman Drew Monroe. Playing one of the strongest players in the country at their respective position, Monroe faced a 10-5 deficit in the fifth game. Monroe was unable to close the match, falling 12-10 in five games, but he displayed strong effort and talent in a fantastic match.

The Big Green return to the court on Jan. 22 when they host No. 15 Middlebury at 2 p.m.
