HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey fell to Colgate, 6-1, at Thompson Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Big Green are now 5-17-0 overall and 3-13-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Raiders improved to 18-7-3 and 9-6-1.
Senior Kennedy Ottenbreit scored her seventh of the season halfway through the third, with assists going to freshman Christina Rombaut and sophomore Caroline Shaunessy.
“I was proud of our resiliency toward the end of the game,” head coach Laura Schuler said. “We went for it. We pulled our goalie, went 6-on-5 and 6-on-4 for a while and generated a lot of chances but unfortunately, we didn't put the puck in the net. Colgate is a really good offensive team and for us to be successful going forward, we need to be able to make better puck reads and be better at managing the puck.”
Colgate opened scoring at 5:16 of the first period with an unassisted tally. Megan Sullivan intercepted a Dartmouth pass in the Big Green's offensive zone, circled around and fired into the right corner. Livia Altmann ended the period by scoring one of her own to give the Raiders a two-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Senior netminder Robyn Chemago stepped up in the second and made some huge saves. Eight minutes in, Colgate won the faceoff and a Raider immediately took a shot from the blueline. Chemago easily made the save, but the puck bounced to the right and rolled behind her, sitting just beyond the goal line. The Big Green goalie spun around and got her stick on it, just beating the charging Raider. At 11:12, Annika Zalewski made it 3-0 with her power-play goal.
Three goals were scored in the span of two and a half minutes in the third. At 9:24, Ottenbreit scored her seventh of the year, backhanding Rombaut's backhand into the right corner, the second assist going to Shaunessy. Colgate followed that up with a Jessie Eldridge goal at 10:49 and an empty netter by Bailey Larson at 11:54. Senior Eleni Tebano and sophomore Tess Bracken both had great blocks when Chemago was out of her cage in favor of the extra skater, but, at 17:44, Larson added another empty netter to close scoring.
The Raiders outshot the Big Green, 42-31, and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0-for-3. Chemago had 36 saves, while Julia Vandyk had 30.
The Big Green will remain at home for two more games, hosting Clarkson and St. Lawrence next weekend.
