DURHAM, N.H. – For the second time this weekend, junior Caroline Shaunessy netted a goal on the 5-on-3, ending the day with a point in the Dartmouth women's hockey 6-1 loss to New Hampshire in a non-conference road tilt on Saturday. Classmate and fellow captain Hailey Noronha assisted.
The Big Green dipped to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Wildcats remain undefeated with a 4-0-1 mark.
Junior Christine Honor played the first 24 minutes and had 10 saves while being saddled with the loss. Classmate Shannon Ropp came in early in the second, making a total of 19 saves and allowing a pair of goals in the remaining 36 minutes. She ended up with a .905 save percentage.
“Obviously, the score was not what we were looking for from that game,” interim head coach Joe Marsh said. “I think the game started well for us and we had a good first period. We were two goals down, but we didn't play poorly. We got a little discouraged after the third goal, but we regained our composure towards the end of the second. We have to be resilient about not letting the scoreboard dictate how we play.
“We worked hard, but we didn't really have a sense of purpose,” Marsh continued. “We need to address that. We need to take a game like this and move forward. This exposed a lot of things that we need to work on and get better. We were waiting for big things to happen, but big things don't happen before the little things.”
Two UNH goals scored in each of the first two periods gave the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. The Big Green spent most of the first 40 minutes ahead in shots – led by junior Kate Landers with three – but the home team had a 21-13 advantage by the tie the third period had started. Ropp made some great saves to keep UNH out of the net for the last 15 minutes of the period.
The Wildcats struggled with penalties in the third, making their way to the box four times in six minutes. In a very similar situation to Friday at Harvard, two consecutive UNH penalties gave Dartmouth 94 seconds of 5-on-3 play. Shaunessy got her second goal of the weekend in that manner 35 seconds in to lessen the Wildcats' lead to three. UNH answered twice more to end the period.
Dartmouth will be on the road for one more weekend, heading to Princeton and Quinnipiac, before returning to Hanover to play nine straight contests that will last for the entirety of November and December.
