PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The Dartmouth bats collected 18 hits while its three pitchers surrendered just four as the Big Green (2-1) cruised to a 13-1 victory over St. Bonaventure (1-2) on Sunday in the squad's final game at the Snowbird Classic.
Sophomore Matt Feinstein and junior Dustin Shirley led the Dartmouth offense as each went 4-for-6 with two runs scored on the day. Among Feinstein's hits were a pair of doubles, and he also had a game-high three RBIs while Shirley drove in a pair of runs as well.
Senior Michael Danielak (1-0) earned the victory with five scoreless innings on the mound, yielding a mere two hits and a walk while striking out six. Junior Jack Fossand was credited with the save for tossing the final three frames, giving up one run on two hits to go with a pair of punchouts.
The Big Green wasted little time in getting the bats going as freshman Trevor Johnson opened the game with a walk, went to second on a Feinstein single and raced home on Shirley's first base hit for a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, senior Adam Gauthier drew a lead-off walk — his first of three free passes — and eventually scored on a two-out wild pitch.
Dartmouth roughed up Bonnie starter Casey Vincent (0-1) in the fourth with three more runs, and again a lead-off walk, this time to freshman Michael Calamari, got him into trouble. Gauthier sacrificed him to second, setting up an RBI single off the bat of rookie Blake Crossing. Although Crossing was gunned down at third trying to take an extra base on a Johnson single, a stolen base and a Feinstein double plated the second run. Shirley followed with a single to score Feinstein, and the Big Green owned a 5-0 lead.
Danielak, meanwhile, allowed just one base runner to reach second base in his five frames, and never more than one in an inning. A one-out bunt single in the first was left stranded at second, a two-out walk in the second proved harmless and when he plunked a batter in the third, Gauthier immediately gunned down the plunkee trying to steal second. The right-hander proceeded to retire the final eight batters he faced, four on strikes, to finish up his first outing of the young season.
Vincent was pulled after four innings of work, and the bullpen got through the fifth unscathed before getting touched for eight runs over the final four frames. Senior Michael Ketchmark drove in a run in the sixth with a double and scored on a single by junior Kyle Holbrook. In the seventh, Feinstein had a two-run double before Ketchmark drove in another run with a knock. Sophomore Nate Ostmo tacked on an RBI single before junior Hayden Rappoport plated the final two runs with a double.
The lone Bonnie run came in the seventh when David Hollins led off with a two-bagger, took third on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by T.J. Baker. Fossand allowed just one more base runner on a single in the eighth that was quickly erased on a double play.
Dartmouth will return to Florida next weekend for a three-game series against 17th-ranked Miami starting Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
Notes: Feinstein finished the opening weekend of the season 9-for-16 (.563) with six RBIs as Dartmouth hit .374 as a team and averaged 9.3 runs in the three games at the Snowbird Classic … the last time the Big Green won at least two of their first three games in a season was in 2013 when it won the Dairy Queen Classic hosted by Minnesota and went on to rip off eight straight wins to start the year.
