LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. — In a game that was already a slugfest, Dartmouth (7-4) scored eight times in the eighth inning to defeat the University of Chicago (5-3) on Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park, 19-11. Senior Michael Ketchmark set career highs with five hits and six RBIs to lead the 21-hit attack for the Big Green.
Of Ketchmark's five hits, three were doubles and another was a solo home run as the team captain racked up 11 total bases on the afternoon. Junior Dustin Shirley had quite the day at the plate as well by going 4-for-5 with a double, two triples, four runs and three RBIs, and sophomore Steffen Torgersen collected a career-high four hits as well while scoring three times and driving in two more.
The Maroons, which racked up 16 hits of their own, were led by leadoff hitter Connor Hickey who was 4-for-6 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Max Larsen contributed three knocks, including a pair of doubles, to go with four RBIs out of the two-hole.
With the score knotted at 11 entering the bottom of the eighth, Dartmouth solved Chicago reliever Ricardo Fernandez (0-1), who had retired all six batters he had faced to that point. Sophomore Mike Brown sparked the rally by bunting for a hit then scored when Shirley laced his second three-bagger of the game into the gap in left-center. Ketchmark followed with a ringing RBI double then stole third before junior Kyle Holbrook drew a walk to drive Fernandez from the game.
But the onslaught was just starting as junior Hayden Rappoport greeted the Maroons' fifth pitcher of the game, Chase Packard, with a line single to left to load the bases. Consecutive RBI singles by Torgersen and sophomore Matt Feinstein quickly ended Packard's time on the mound, and sophomore Nate Ostmo and freshman Trevor Johnson kept the hit parade going against Patrick Rogers with two more run-scoring base hits. Brown, who had started the uprising, made the first out of the inning with a sacrifice fly, and Ketchmark capped the rally with a two-out, RBI single.
The game quickly got out of hand as Chicago held a 10-8 advantage after just three innings. The Maroons scored twice in the top of the first as Larsen drove in the first run with a double and scored the other on an infield out. But the Big Green matched those two runs thanks in part to two errors on one play and Ketchmark's first double.
Chicago proceeded to put five more runs on the board in the second, only to once again surrender the same amount in the bottom half of the frame. The lone Dartmouth error contributed to a pair of unearned runs in the mix, while Larsen's second double proved to be the big hit, driving in two runs.
With a run in and the bases loaded in the Big Green half of the second, Shirley jumped all over reliever Austin McGimpsey by ripping his first pitch for a two-run double. Two pitches later, Ketchmark also drove in two with another two-bagger to tie the score at seven.
Freshman Austen Michel replaced Dartmouth starter Clay Chatham to start the third, but the Maroon bats kept producing, all with two outs this time as Hickey, Larsen and Ian Bohn all had RBI singles to put Chicago back on top, 10-7.
The Big Green got an unearned run right away with Torgersen taking third on an errant pickoff throw and scoring on an Ostmo fly to right. In the fourth, they tied the score when Shirley tripled with one out and trotted home on a balk, and Ketchmark followed with a booming solo home run to left, his second of the season. Torgersen then gave Dartmouth its first lead with one of his four singles, plating Holbrook who had doubled after Ketchmark's long ball.
Pinch hitter Nick Toomey brought the Maroons back to even at 11 apiece with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Chicago threatened to reclaim the lead in the top of the eighth, but reliever Patrick Peterson stranded the go-ahead run at third by getting a called third strike to end the inning.
Peterson (1-2) was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless eighth, and senior Chris Burkholder shut the door with a perfect ninth. Chatham struggled in his first start of 2017, allowing seven runs, five earned, over two innings with a pair of punchouts.
Each of the six Chicago pitchers gave up at least one run, with starter John Kruppe getting touched for six runs in just 1.1 innings of work.
Dartmouth will attempt to win its third straight game on Wednesday evening when the team plays at Bethune-Cookman (14-7), which lost to UCF this evening in 11 innings, 5-4. The Big Green are slated to send sophomore right-hander Cole O'Connor (1-0, 3.60) to the mound to face off against Wildcat right-hander Tyler Krull (1-1, 4.85).
Notes: Ketchmark is the first Big Green player with five hits in a game since Shirley got a quintet last year at Princeton on April 2 ... Shirley is the fourth Dartmouth hitter to swat two triples in a game twice in a career, joining Henry Bjorkman '25, Jake Isler '96 and Joe Purritano '16 ... the 19 runs for the Big Green were their most since a 22-10 victory at Yale on April 11, 2015 ... and the 21 hits were their most in almost exactly six years (21 vs. UMBC on March 25, 2011) ... the last Dartmouth hitter with at least six RBIs in a game was Dustin Selzer with seven against Columbia on April 8, 2012.
