NEWARK, Del. – The Dartmouth field hockey team was unable to find the scoring touch necessary in an early-morning game Sunday to produce the desired result against non-conference Longwood.

The Lancers improved to 4-0 this season with a 5-1 win against the Big Green (0-2) in a neutral-site contest played on Delaware's Rullo Field.

The lone goal from Sunday's “road team” came off the stick of junior Gemma Bautista in the 67th minute. It was just the second goal of her career and the first since her freshman season in 2015.

"This weekend taught us some important lessons," head coach Amy Fowler said. "We will draw from our positives as we had moments we liked. And we must look within and make some changes as we head into next weekend's contests."

Leading just 1-0 at intermission, Longwood opened up the half with three-straight goals in the second half to push its advantage to four. Following Bautista's tally, Abbey Ripley capped a hat trick with her third goal of the morning 22 seconds later for the final marker of the game.

Sophomore Carmen Braceras picked up her first point of the season with an assist on the Bautista score. Junior goalkeeper Hailey Valerio stopped 11 shots in the loss, while Katie Wyman needed to make just one save in the win.

Leonie Verstraete added a goal and two assists for the Lancers as well as they held a 16-2 edge in shots on goal and an 8-3 advantage in corners.

Dartmouth will open the home portion of its schedule next Saturday when it returns to action, hosting Rider at 3 p.m. The Green will then welcome Bryant to Chase AstroTurf Field the following afternoon (3 p.m.).
