HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's hockey played an evenly matched exhibition game against McGill on Sunday, falling by a score of 2-1 when the Martlets found the back of the net with just two seconds remaining in the third.
All three Green netminders played 20 minutes: senior Christie Honor had six saves in the first period, sophomore
Kayla Wormsbecher stopped 12 in the second, and senior
Shannon Ropp had eight saves in the third.
Dartmouth had a number of good attempts in the first period, including a hit pipe by senior
Kate Landers, but goalie Tricia Deguire kept the Big Green out of the net. A Dartmouth penalty late in the period resulted in the Martlets' first goal less than 20 seconds later.
The Big Green came alive in the second, peppering Deguire with six shots in the span of 20 seconds, four of which were saved and one by freshman
Gabby Billing that hit the pipe. At 17:26, freshman
Chloe Puddifant netted the tying goal just four seconds after a delayed penalty call sent Wormsbecher to the bench for an extra skater.
The home team's best chances at scoring the go-ahead goal in the third came when junior
Christina Rombaut's shot rang off the crossbar and senior
Tess Bracken fired point-black at McGill's goalie, but neither found the back of the net. With two seconds remaining in the period, the Martlets scored to prevent sending the game to overtime.
Dartmouth outshot McGill, 32-28. Rombaut was on fire in faceoffs, winning 22-of-28.
Dartmouth will officially kick off the 2018-19 season next Friday, Oct. 19 at Harvard. The game against the Crimson will be the Big Green's first of five consecutive road contests.
