PRINCETON, N.J. – Dartmouth men's tennis junior
Charlie Broom won his semifinal match before falling in the final on the last day of the ITA Northeast Regional Championship at Princeton.
Â
In the semifinal, Broom defeated Jack Mingjie Lin of Columbia by a score of 6-4, 6-3. A few hours later in the final, Broom took on Cornell's David Volfson, falling to the Big Red player by a score of 7-5, 6-3.
Â
With his semifinal victory, the Big Green junior qualified for the ITA National Fall Championship next month. This is the second time in the last four years that Dartmouth will have a player compete at the fall nationals, the last being Dovydas Sakinis '16 in 2015.
Â
"It was a great run for Charlie," head coach
Chris Drake said. "This is a really strong event and Charlie showed mental and physical toughness to make it as far as he did. He's disappointed in the final and I know he will learn some lessons there, but he is excited to qualify for the fall nationals, which will be another great opportunity for him to play amongst the best in the country, which is where he belongs.
Â
"Charlie has worked very hard over the last two years," Drake continued, "and has improved in pretty much every area of his game, so it was really nice to see all of that hard work pay off."
Â
In a few days, the Green will host the Dartmouth Invitational.
