THIS WEEKEND
After kicking off the season at Harvard on Friday, the Dartmouth women's hockey team will remain on the road this weekend, heading to New York to face nationally ranked Colgate and Cornell. Both games can be viewed by purchasing an ESPN+ subscription, while the one against the Raiders can also be viewed internationally.
LAST TIME OUT
The Big Green dropped its ECAC Hockey and Ivy League opener last week, scoring the first goal before ultimately being defeated by the Crimson by a score of 3-1.
Rose Falzone found the back of the net for the first time since November of 2016, being assisted by rookies
Lotti Odnoga and
Sara McClanahan, who picked up their first collegiate points.
Harvard controlled the opening minutes of the first period until a Crimson penalty halfway through gave Dartmouth energy. The Big Green took seven shots, with the majority of them being blocked. Although the visitors did not score on the power play, it really jumpstarted the offense, resulting in the first goal of the night. Falzone circled around and pocketed Odnoga's rebounded shot to give the Green a 1-0 advantage after one.
The home team had a score to settle in the second period, outshooting Dartmouth, 4-2, in the first minute and a half before scoring the tying goal 30 seconds later. Both teams continued to pressure, keeping Honor and Crimson goalie Lindsay Reed on their toes. With just over a minute left in the period, Harvard netted the go ahead, a shot Honor tried to save with a dive to the left, but was just a second too late.
The Green had a chance to score the tying goal midway through the third when
Sydney Hill and
Gabby Billing took back-to-back shots, causing Reed to fall flat on her back, but none found their way into the back of the net. Four of the six penalties committed during the game came in the third, but all were killed. Harvard added an empty netter with a minute to go to end the game.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate has already played six games to Dartmouth's one. Since starting off with a 4-4 exhibition tie against the KRS Vanke Rays, the Raiders have faced Penn State, Ohio State and Northeastern, playing two games against each opponent and going 1-1 against all three of them. The Big Green will be their first conference opponent of 2018-19.
LAST TIME AGAINST COLGATE
The Raiders came away with two wins in 2017-18, winning 4-1 in January and 5-1 the following month. Playing at home on Feb. 2, a penalty-ridden first period led to
Tess Bracken's sixth tally of the season. With 45 seconds of 5-on-3 action ahead of them,
Hailey Noronha and
Kate Landers put together a nice play and found Bracken at the point, who sent the puck to the left of netminder Liz Auby. Colgate responded with three goals within a two-minute span to take a 3-1 lead, increasing it further early in the third.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
Cornell played two preseason games in early October, defeating both the Toronto Junior Aeros (6-1) and the Buffalo Beauts (5-2). The Big Red officially opened their campaign with a mid-week home game against Syracuse, downing the Orange by a score of 4-1.
LAST TIME AGAINST CORNELL
The Green went 0-2 against the Big Red last year, falling by a score of 2-0 on the road in January and 3-1 in February. In the second meeting, Bracken netted her second goal of the weekend early in the third. After she fired from a difficult angle, the puck went through Marlene Boissonanault's legs and the Big Red goalie watched it settle behind her in the net.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Christine Honor played all three periods against Harvard, coming away with 33 saves and a .943 save percentage. Dartmouth's other goalies,
Shannon Ropp and
Kayla Wormsbecher, have not yet seen any playing time during the regular season, although they both appeared in the exhibition game against McGill.
NEXT UP FOR DARTMOUTH
The Big Green will be on the road for one more weekend before finally returning home to Thompson Arena. They will play Princeton and Quinnipiac on Nov. 2-3.
