SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Dartmouth volleyball team snapped Bryant's five-match winning streak on Tuesday, defeating the Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-23) in both teams' final non-conference contest of the season.
Sophomore Mallen Bischoff led with nine kills and also added three assists and three digs, while junior Abby Kott had a .429 hitting percentage and six total blocks. Senior Zoe Leonard was first with 16 digs and junior Corinne Cox had a team-leading 17 assists.
"We had a chance to play different players and try some new things tonight," head coach Gilad Doron said. "It is always a challenge to play midweek games on the road, but I was happy to see how our players adjusted and made smart plays. We continued to show our strong blocking presence and we passed well."
The Big Green (9-12) and the Bulldogs (18-10) went back and forth right from the start, never being separated by more than two points until some Bryant errors and a kill by Kott gave Dartmouth its first three-point lead of the game (12-9). The home team managed to get within one (16-15), but a kill by Bischoff and three straight Bulldog errors allowed the Green to put some distance between them (20-15). Dartmouth maintained its edge, taking set one following a kill by freshman Francesca Meldrum (25-19).
A 4-0 run from two kills by Bischoff and a pair of Bryant errors started the second set in the Big Green's favor. The Bulldogs worked their way back to get within one point (6-5) before a slew of Bryant errors gave Dartmouth back its lead (14-8). Kott and fellow junior Carly Tower were a blocking force, pulling the Green even further ahead (20-9). The Bulldogs found their stride later on in the set, but it was too late to do much damage before Dartmouth made it 2-0 (25-16).
The Bulldogs continued to be plagued by errors in the third, giving Dartmouth a 4-0 edge. Bryant found its way into the game and got within one point (8-7), closing the gap any time the Green would pull away. A handful of Dartmouth errors gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the match (13-11). The teams worked through a handful of ties before some errors gave the lead back to the Big Green (16-15). Dartmouth took that advantage and ran with it, making it a 22-15 set thanks to kills by sophomore Olympia Nagel-Caland, freshman Nicole Liddle and Bischoff. Bryant threatened with an 8-2 run, but sophomore Tola Akinwumi ended it with a kill (25-23).
Dartmouth will host Brown and Yale this weekend, playing at Leede Arena for the final time in 2018. Before the match against the Bulldogs, the Green's two seniors, Leonard and Samantha Bozoian, will be recognized and thanked for their four years of dedication.
