PRINCETON, N.J. – Dartmouth field hockey's
Katie Spanos and
Jessica Valvano were named to 2018 All-Ivy League teams Tuesday afternoon as announced by the conference office.
Â
Spanos was named to the All-Ivy League First Team as a junior this fall after once again leading her team in scoring. Valvano, a senior and team captain, was recognized with an Honorable Mention selection.
Â
For Spanos, this marked her second straight season earning a yearly accolade from the Ancient Eight after making the second team in 2017. Valvano's recognition in her final season with the Big Green was the first of any kind from the conference in her career.
Â
"In such a competitive league, it's a definite honor to have Katie and Jess honored with their respective awards," head coach
Amy Fowler said. "Katie has impacted our program since her arrival in 2016. She's a dangerous attacker, and has led our team in goals and points for the past two seasons and is well deserving of this accolade.Â
Â
"Jess has played a key role in our backfield since her sophomore year," Fowler continued. "This season, she stepped up big time, as our center back. She's made countless defensive stops in all of our matches this year. I'm so happy Jess was recognized as an Honorable Mention selection."
Â
For the second straight season, Spanos netted nine goals for the Green and White, finishing tied for fifth amongst all Ivy players. Leading the team in both goals (9) and points (19), the Pennsylvania native becomes the first Dartmouth player in four years to lead the team in scoring in consecutive seasons as Ali Savage did from 2012-14. Of her nine goals, three of them were game winners, second most by any player in the conference in 2018.
Â
Valvano stepped up her game as a senior this fall, continuing to make her presence felt in the defensive zone, while also adding depth in the offensive end. Her five defensive saves this year were third in the Ivy League and 10th in the nation. Known for her strong play in her team's own end, Valvano made contributions on the front line as well, posting career highs in goals (1), assists (3) and points (5) this season. Her first goal proved to be the game winner at Columbia in October that gave her head coach the 150th win of her career.
