THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth women's hockey team will host RIT in a pair of non-conference tilts on Friday and Saturday. The Big Green and the Tigers will meet at 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. the following day.
LAST TIME OUT
Tess Bracken scored her second and third goals of the season as Dartmouth defeated Vermont, 3-1, Tuesday night for its second straight win. After five games away from Hanover to start the 2018-19 season, the non-conference contest marked the home opener for the Big Green at Thompson Arena.
Lotti Odnoga also ended the game with two points after assisting on the second two tallies, while
Christina Rombaut and
Sara McClanahan had a point each
Dartmouth got the scoring started when Bracken intercepted a defensive zone pass between the Catamount defensemen and tucked a nifty backhand into the top corner over the glove of netminder Blanka Skodova 11:23 into the game.
That 1-0 lead would carry over to the midway point of the second period until Vermont finally cashed in on one of their nine shots in the frame. A puck from the point was knocked down by a Dartmouth defender in the high slot and then redirected between the circles by Theresa Schafzahl, causing the puck to trickle by
Christine Honor's left pad as she was expecting the shot to her right.
Bracken's second goal of the night broke the tie 2:49 into the third. Her one-timer on the power play from inside the blueline crossed up Skodova as the netminder tried to reach across her body with her glove. However, her timing was off and the puck sailed into the top corner for the go-ahead goal.
The third goal of the night for the home team was the result of an interesting play that left many on the ice confused.
Sara McClanahan carried the puck into the offensive zone, made a move through the defender's leg before seemingly jamming it into the pads of Skodova. When the dust settled, there were four players in crease with the puck in the net and McClanahan standing off to the side.
The play was reviewed, but determined to be a good goal, the second of the season for the rookie forward.
DARTMOUTH ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jennifer Costa was named the Dartmouthsports.com female athlete of the week after her first collegiate marker lifted the Green to a 3-2 overtime win over Quinnipiac on the road.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
RIT has been struggling a bit, entering the weekend with a 1-6-3 mark. The Tigers last and only win of the season was a 2-0 victory over Holy Cross on Sept. 28. RIT has lost three straight to RPI (3-2) and Robert Morris (3-1, 3-0). Kendall Cornine leads the team (6-2-8), while three other players are close behind with five points each.
LAST TIME AGAINST RIT
In a series dating back almost 30 years, this will be just the fifth time that the Big Green and the Tigers have met and the first time in the last 23 years. After falling in the first meeting on New Year's Eve in 1989, Dartmouth went on to win the next three contests in 1990, 1994 and 1995. The last time the teams met on Feb. 11, the Green walked away with a 6-0 victory.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Honor picked up her second win of the season against Vermont after making 22 saves, including 10 in the final period. In five games, she has made 147 saves, has a .907 save percentage and 2.96 goals against average.
Kayla Wormsbecher played her first collegiate game against Cornell, making 34 saves while being saddled with the loss. Dartmouth's other goalie,
Shannon Ropp, has not yet seen any playing time.
