THIS WEEKEND
With three road games ahead of them, the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team will first head to New York to face St. John's on Saturday afternoon.
LAST TIME OUT
Six straight goals in the second half lifted the Big Green to a 9-8 victory over Wagner at Scully-Fahey Field on March 3. Ben Martin led the team with four goals, while George Prince (1G, 2A), Richie Loftus (2G, 1A) and David Gallagher (1G, 1A) all had multi-point performances. In net, George Christopher played all 60 minutes, making 12 saves en route to his second victory of the season.
A Dartmouth penalty 11 seconds into the first quarter resulted in a goal for Wagner and, by the halfway point, the Seahawks had added one more to make it 2-0. The Green soon turned things around and markers scored by Martin and Prince two minutes apart made it a 2-2 game heading to the second.
Martin's second of the afternoon less than two minutes into the second quarter gave Dartmouth its first lead of the afternoon, but four unanswered Seahawk tallies gave the visitors a 6-3 advantage.
Dartmouth dominated the third, scoring a trio of goals while allowing zero. After six minutes of scoreless play to start the third, a pair of Green goals netted just 32 seconds apart made it a one-goal game. Loftus scored the first and assisted on the second, Tyler Haskell picked up his first point of the season with a helper, and Martin completed his hat trick. Gallagher wrapped things up nicely, netting his first of the game with 18.2 seconds to go to tie the score at 6-6.
Three unanswered goals in the third turned into three more within four minutes in the fourth thanks to goals by Martin, Jack Korzelius and Loftus to give Dartmouth a 9-6 edge. Having been shut out for almost 30 full minutes, Wagner found the back of the net twice and, with 30 seconds to go, just one goal separated the teams (9-8). A huge point-blank save by Christopher with 15 seconds stopped Wagner's momentum and allowed the Big Green to play out the final seconds to victory.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM
St. John's enters the weekend with a 4-2 mark following wins against Hartford (14-12), High Point (16-11), Saint Joseph's (12-7) and Siena (14-7), and losses to Rutgers (12-8) and UNC (9-8). In the middle of a three-game homestand, the Red Storm are on a two-game winning streak. Jason DeBenedictis leads the team with 23 points (15G, 8A).
LAST TIME AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
The Big Green and the Storm met six times in the span of 10 years, with St. John's winning each meeting, but have not played one another in almost 80 years. On April 8, 1939, Dartmouth fell on the road by a score of 11-5.
LEADING THE WAY
Prince remains first among the Big Green with 14 points from five goals and a team-leading nine assists, while Martin is close behind with nine goals and two helpers for 11 points.
AND IN NET
Christopher and Alex Burnley have both appeared in three games and started two and have played a similar number of minutes. Christopher has made 21 saves and allowed 23 for a .477 save percentage and 11.28 goals against average, while Burnley has saved 19 and allowed 24 for a .442 save percentage and 12.24 goals against average.
