BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Elijah Parks threw the final 5.2 innings for host Cal State Bakersfield, yielding just one unearned run to make sure the five Roadrunner runs in the first two innings held up to defeat Dartmouth (3-7) on Saturday afternoon at Hardt Field, 9-4. The 11-hit attack for CSUB (8-12) featured four players with two hits, while Jared Toothman drove in three of the first five runs.
Senior Dustin Shirley was one of three Big Green hitters with two safeties to extend his hit streak to eight games, and junior Matt Feinstein drove in two of the four runs with a fourth-inning single.
Bakersfield loaded the bases immediately in the first with a walk and a pair of singles before Toothman drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Austyn Tengan took third on the play when the throw squirted away, then scored on a passed ball. Jassen Oliver then poked a single to right, plating Andrew Penner from second for a 3-0 Roadrunner lead.
In the second, Toothman came through for CSUB with a two-out single with the bases loaded, driving home two more to boost the lead to 5-0.
Dartmouth cracked the scoreboard in the third when junior Sean Sullivan was hit by a pitch, Holbrook singled him to second with two down and Shirley followed with an RBI single to center scoring Sullivan.
In the fourth, the Big Green closed the gap with two more runs, loading the bases with one down to knock Roadrunner starter Alec Daily from the mound. After Parks got the second out on strikes, Feinstein ripped a 2-2 pitch to left for a two-run single, but was gunned down trying to take an extra base on the throw toward the plate.
Cal State Bakersfield took advantage of an error in its half of the fourth to get one of those runs back. Daniel Carrizosa led off by reaching second on a throwing error, took third on a bunt and sprinted home on a Tengan sacrifice fly.
But the Roadrunners gave that run right back in the fifth as Shirley hit a one-out single, stole second, moved up on a fly ball then scored on a passed ball to make it a 6-4 game.
Big Green senior right-hander Clay Chatham settled in after the first two innings to complete six stanzas, surrendering six runs, five earned, on eight hits and three walks while striking out one. In the seventh, Ryan Koch belted a two-out, two-run homer to left, his second four-bagger of the season, for some insurance. Bakersfield loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth, but senior reliever Patrick Peterson limited the damage to one run by inducing a double play and getting the third out swinging through an 0-2 pitch.
As Chatham settled in, so did Parks, yielding just two singles and a hit batter over the final four frames to finish off the victory, improving his record to 2-0 on the season. He finished having given up four base hits without a walk while fanning four.
Tengan had a perfect day at the plate with two singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly, while Penner, Oliver and Mark Pena each had two hits as well.
Joining Shirley with two hits were Sullivan and junior Nate Ostmo, who also walked once as Dartmouth collected nine hits as a team.
The Big Green will look to salvage a series split in the fourth and final game at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday at noon (PDT).
