BEAUMONT, Texas – The Dartmouth softball team continued its time in Texas on Tuesday, falling to Lamar University in both games of an evening doubleheader, 8-0 and 4-0 respectively.
The Big Green fall to 5-11 on the season while the Cardinals move to 17-12. Dartmouth will continue its time in the Lone Star State for one more non-conference road game tomorrow afternoon, facing Houston Baptist.
In game one of the two-game action, the home team got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning and held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third when their bats caught fire.
Lamar's Taylor Davis hit a single up the middle with runners on second and third, batting in one and advancing to second base herself with no outs. The next batter for the Cardinals reached on a fielder's choice, as the runner on third scored taking a 4-0 lead. Kimberly Mattox was hit by a pitch and loaded the bases with one out, before Shelby Hughston hit a single through the right side, batting in the runner on third. With a 5-0 lead and one out, Savana Guidry grounded out to first base, allowing another run to be scored as the home team took a 6-0 advantage into the fourth inning.
Dartmouth saw a chance to get on the board in the top of the fifth, as Taylor Ward and McKenna Gray were both walked and Ward advanced to third with only one out, but the final two batters popped up and grounded out to end the inning.
The Cardinals struck again in the bottom of the fifth, extending the score to 7-0 and the road squad came into the sixth with another opportunity to cut the lead. Micah Schroder led off with a single to left field and Calista Almer reached first on a fielder's choice, but Schroder was out at second base and Almer did not advance past first. Lamar scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
The late game had a similar start with a 0-0 score going into the second inning, before the home team scored two runs with the same crew who lit up the bottom of the fifth in the first game. Cardinals' Hughston singled to right field batting in a runner on third, followed by Guidry grounding out to second and grabbing another RBI taking a 2-0 lead.
Heading into the third, Tiffany Dyson led with a single to the shortstop, but was unable to cut the lead as she remained on first base as the inning ended.
Lamar tacked on its third run in the bottom of the fourth as Guidry stole home, and scored the final run of the night in the fifth, which was unearned on a fielding error.
The Big Green faced their last chance to score in the top of the seventh and started out quickly. Freshman Schae Nelson singled and then advanced to second on a passed ball, as Loghan Thomas joined her, hitting a single herself. Nelson went for the score as the Cardinals' centerfielder was fielding the ball and throwing it to the catcher, Nelson was out at home but Thomas remained on second base. That was as close as Dartmouth would get to cutting the lead.
In the first game, freshman Shelby Wilkison got the start on the mound. She pitched two innings where she faced 13 batters, allowed five hits, walked three, struck out one and had three errors. Fellow freshman Heather Turner came in for the remaining 3.2 innings, facing 20 batters allowing five hits, striking out three and walking one.
Senior Breanna Ethridge pitched all six innings for the Big Green in the second game, striking out four of the 29 batters faced, she allowed 10 hits, walked one and had three errors.
