BRIGHTON, Mass. — Dartmouth battled back from three runs down to tie Boston College in the seventh, only to have the host Eagles put three runs on the board in their half of the seventh and two more in the eighth to claim an 8-3 victory over the Big Green at Harrington Athletics Village at Brighton Field on Wednesday afternoon. Jake Palomaki had three extra-base hits and three RBIs to help Boston College (13-23) snap a four-game skid.
Junior Matt Feinstein had three of the nine hits for Dartmouth (9-17-1), extending his hitting streak to eight games.
Trailing 3-0 going into the sixth inning, the Big Green finally got to Eagles' starter Matt Gill, putting the first two hitters on base on a hit by pitch and a base hit by Feinstein. A double play nearly sabotaged the inning, but senior Dustin Shirley beat an infield hit to drive in junior Sean Sullivan to get Dartmouth on the board. A single and a walk loaded the bases before senior Hayden Rappoport was plunked, forcing home another run. Gill was lifted in favor of Zach Stromberg, who threw one pitch to get the third out on a fly to right, stranding three runners.
In the seventh, Dartmouth drew consecutive walks and laid down a bunt to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Senior Kyle Holbrook knotted the score with a sacrifice fly, but when Shirley recorded another infield hit, Sullivan tried to catch the defense napping by scoring from second. Palomaki made the heads-up play from his position at short, however, gunning down Sullivan at the plate, leaving the score tied at three.
Boston College struck back in the bottom half, beginning with a Joe Suozzi one-out double — one of his three hits — off freshman reliever Max Hunter (0-1). A throwing error on an infield grounder put runners on second and third, and Palomaki greeted senior reliever Mike Concato with his second double of the day, plating two runs. Dartmouth had an opportunity to escape without further damage, but a throw to second from the outfield to double up Palomaki was dropped. Jack Cunningham took advantage of the extra chance, ripping an RBI single to center for a 6-3 lead.
Boston College added two more runs in the eighth on a Suozzi RBI single and a squeeze bunt by Brian Dempsey, and John Witkowski held Dartmouth scoreless for the final two frames to earn his second save.
Stromberg (1-0) was credited with the win after giving up a run over 1.1 innings in relief of Gill, who surrendered two runs over 5.2 innings, striking out four and walking one.
Each of the three Eagles that collected three hits — Palomaki, Suozzi and Jake Goodreau — scored twice, while it was Palomaki who got the scoring started by leading off the first with a triple and scoring on a Chris Galland grounder to short.
Sophomore Tyler Fagler started on the mound for the Big Green, allowing two runs, one earned, over three stanzas on three hits with three strikeouts.
All nine of Dartmouth's hits were singles with Feinstein providing three and Shirley a pair.
The Big Green (5-3-1 Ivy) conclude a seven-game road swing this weekend with a big series at the Ivy League leader, Yale (15-15, 9-3 Ivy). The doubleheader on Saturday starts at 11:30 a.m. while the single game on Sunday has first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
Notes: Boston College improved to 40-30 against Dartmouth in a series that dates back to 1886 … three of the Eagles' eight runs were unearned, two more unearned runs than the Big Green have allowed in nine conference games … Dartmouth went 0-4 against ACC schools this season having lost all three games at Georgia Tech to open the season … Sullivan saw his average fall below .400 for just the fourth time after any game this season, going 0-for-2, though he did walk twice and get hit by a pitch to boost his on-base percentage to .487.
